Last couple of years have seen an immense rise of Gen AI specially post the launch of Open AI in November 2022. With more advancement in the area the Gen AI models have reached new levels of performance, demonstrating the potential for various real-world applications, triggering a wave of research and development, and large corporate investments in GenAI.

Gen AI Patent Families Grew 2X over the last decade, while scientific publications increased by 300X

A similar trend is also observed in the way Intellectual Property is being created in Gen AI, with the overall patent families in Gen AI growing from 733 in 2014 to over 14,000 in 2023. WIPO Patent Landscape Report – Generative Artificial Intelligence

If deep dive into the trend, there has been a significant rise in patent families as well as scientific publications post 2019.

  • In terms of patent families nearly 2/3 of the total patent families were added post 2019
  • While more than 85% of the scientific publications came post 2019
  • Interestingly over 25% of all GenAI patents and over 45% of all GenAI scientific papers were published in 2023 alone.

One of the reasons as highlighted in the WIPO report is that – post the introduction of the transformer in 2017, the deep neural network architecture behind the Large Language Models have become synonymous with GenAI and have really pushed the number of GenAI patents which increased by over 800% till 2023.

China continues to lead in Gen AI Innovation

Inventors based in China were responsible for more than 38,000 patent families between 2014 and 2023, based on the inventor addresses published on patents. Since 2017, China has published more patents in this field each year than all other countries combined.

Consequently, top Chinese companies lead in Gen AI Patents, while Chinese Institutions lead in scientific publications.

  • Tencent, Ping An Insurance Group and Baidu own the most GenAI patents (the top 3)
  • The only research organization in the top 10 ranking is The Chinese Academy of Sciences (fourth).
  • On the Scientific Publications side, the story is similar The Chinese Academy of Sciences leads in terms of scientific publications with more than 1,100 publications since 2010. Tsinghua University and Stanford University follow in second and third place with more than 600 publications each.
  • Alphabet/Google (fourth) is the only company in the top 20 (556 scientific publications).
