Voice-based solutions are for everyone

I was watching TV over the weekend when my daughter, who is eight years old, came to me and asked if she could have my phone for some time. Assuming she would want to talk to her grandmother, I gave her my phone. After a while I could hear her talking to someone but it was definitely not her grandmother. From a distance I could hear a lady on the other side talking to my daughter in British English accent. A bit worried, and to check if she had mistakenly called someone in the UK, I entered her room. I was surprised to see that she was talking to Google Assistant on my phone and was using it quite well to get information related to her school homework. I was impressed and asked her who taught her to use Google Assistant, to which she innocently answered, “What’s in it to learn, I just know”.

Well, this is just one of the many use cases that shows how quietly and unintentionally voice assistants have made in-roads in our day-to-day life and are unknowingly helping us in a big way.

Growing popularity of voice-based solutions

Voice-based solutions are gaining popularity due to increasing penetration of smart speakers and growing voice searches over smartphones. In fact, global smart speaker sales is expected to grow 32% (CAGR) through 2017-2022 to reach USD17.4 billion. In addition, one-third of the 3.5 billion searches conducted on Google today are voice searches, which are expected to account for half of all searches in next two years.

% of Internet users using voice enabled functionality (any device)

India is the leader when it comes to internet users using voice-enabled functionality. This is primarily due to increasing internet penetration in the country, augmented by growing smartphone penetration which is expected to reach 829 million smartphone users by 2022.

Potential of voice

Some of the early use cases of voice-enabled solutions are limited primarily to seeking information, playing music, accessing customer service, etc. However, with technological advancements on both hardware and software front, one could expect some innovative use cases in domains such as healthcare, education, entertainment, hospitality, retail, etc.

I strongly believe that voice will play a pivotal role in bringing the next 300 million Indians on digital platform, especially non-English speakers from semi-urban and rural areas. It would enable access to government services for the regional language speakers, under privileged, illiterate and visually impaired.
