In my last blog “PATENTING TRENDS IN INDIA - FOSTERING AN IP-LED DIGITAL ECONOMY”, we talked about the launch of the patent report by nasscom on the "World IP Day".

In this blog let’s deep-dive into the details of the some of the key global trends that we have seen as per the latest WIPO report “World Intellectual Property Indicators 2023

Interestingly the report highlights the increase in global patent filing with 3.46 million patents being filed in 2022 an increase from 3.4 million in 2021, rising 1.7% and marking a consecutive third year of growth.

Asia driven by China continued to lead.

China continued to the leader with the IP office of China receiving 46.8% or 1.6 million of the global patent applications in 2022.

India also witnessed an increase in patent filing to 77k in 2022, with its share increasing to 2.2% in 2022 from 1.8% in 2021.

Computer Technology the most featured Technology

Basis the latest available data for patent applications filed for 2021, computer technology 2021, computer technology was the most frequently featured technology in published patent applications worldwide, comprising 11.1% of the global patent filing. Interestingly this share has seen continuous increase doubling itself over the last decade.

Notably, Computer technology has been the leading application area since 2002. Until 2001, Electrical machinery was the leading application area for patents.

Share of Women in Globa Patent Filing has witnessed increase in 2022

The share of women in global patent filing increased to 17.1% in 2022, which remained constant at 16.5% over the previous two years, after a significant fall from 18.7% in 2019.

The same number for India also increased to 11.6% in 2022 from 10.2% in 2021, however it remains below the global average as well as significantly lower compared to most of the leading patent filing countries, which highlights more efforts are required towards pushing women’s participation in IP cretion.
