India is unique; one comes across vastly different dialects, cuisines, styles of clothing and even the music changes just by traveling 100 kilometers in any direction.

This amazing diversity also brings governance challenges - both planning and execution. In order to move towards becoming a ‘developed’ country, it is critical for the India’s decision-makers to galvanize this large diverse population with the required skills to undertake the massive scale of digitalization and digital transformation to ensure we cover this diverse scope - and time is of the essence; we need tremendous speed, while ensuring this is all accomplished in a sustainable manner. That's the only way to build tremendous value by 2047 and become a truly developed country.

This is where this community of technology enthusiasts, leaders and dreamers can contribute. All of the 5S mentioned above (borrowed to a large extent from the NITI Aayog) can be powered by India’s tech community.

The following are key things to keep in mind as we work to better India’s future from a tech standpoint:

  1. Transform where it matters the most. The last thing we want on top of a mounting urban waste problem is to add to waste in our digital transformation efforts. Businesses often spend millions on digital transformation only to see that they have managed to accelerate inefficient processes or come to the realization that the transformation isn’t sticking.
  2. Focus on Transparency. We’ve already begun to see start-ups scaling, scale-ups becoming uniforms and large companies turning into global powerhouses.. . In order to scale sustainably, corporate governance needs the support of digital technologies to drive transparency and traceability which in turn keeps tabs on revenue leakage, fraudulent activities and ultimately driving shareholder trust.
  3. Earth is our Future. Today, , we are seeing unprecedented heat waves across the country. Climate change is real and is here. We cannot wait for world governments to pass laws and frame policies to drive sustainability. Sustainability starts with us and we need to move beyond using this term only for CSR. Businesses need to adopt technologies which lend decision-making capabilities to drive sustainability - proactively, before a decision is made, and not to simply measure retrospective carbon footprint. Every decision should be enabled on digital platforms where leaders use sustainability as a parameter. Sustainability should no longer be relegated to an afterthought.
  4. Diversity is a strength, leverage it. A while ago,I came across an organisation which boasted of hiring only IITians. Many of them were put in technical documentation roles, which ultimately led to them quitting due to a lack of feeling challenged. It is quite a common sight in many technology companies. We need to think bigger and broader. Inclusivity is not only about gender or differently-abled it is about creating equitable opportunities. People do well if we allow them to do well. The tech community needs to lead the country by example in terms of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion - again, not as a CSR tagline but as a fundamental Organisational Design.

India is unique, big, diverse and complex and yet is poised to play a defining role in shaping the future of the global economy in 2024 and beyond. We might take inspiration from other nations but we will have to chart our own way forward. To avoid any delays, and solidify our role, the time to embrace technology and act is now!
