India boasts of an attractive talent pool – with the second highest English speaking youth population, highest STEM graduates etc. At the very core of a thriving GCC model in India lies the nation’s vast pool of talent and growing knowledge economy. GCCs are able to scale up in India thanks to the diverse pool of talent available, providing them with a competitive edge. Along with the talent pool, India also boasts of a thriving startup ecosystem, rising patent filing, increasing research output and rise in scientific publication output, which together makes India an attractive global destination for GCCs to come and scale up their operations.

As GCCs are evolving and moving up the maturity value chain, roles are evolving and expanding and hence there is a growing need for digital skills. This growing demand puts pressure on attracting and retaining the relevant talent for GCCs.

Various talent related considerations for GCCs in India include –

GCC risk 1

  1. Talent availability, capability, and employability – While talent at scale is available, growing demand for digital skills requires focused efforts from GCCs to ensure sustained pipeline for niche talent, and hence this has become a top priority for GCCs in India.
  1. Attracting and retaining top talent – It becomes difficult for Indian GCCs to attract and retain talent due to thriving intensifies competition for skilled professionals among start-ups, tech service providers and GCCs.
  1. Leadership talent - As GCCs mature and become strategic hubs, need for strong leadership becomes paramount. As more and more GCC leadership roles become global, the need for finding and nurturing talent equipped for global leadership positions becomes critical.
  2. Cost arbitrage - Over the years, with rising wage bills, a perception has grown that the cost arbitrage advantage may have become blunted, especially for niche skills and leadership talent. The narrative around the declining cost arbitrage for GCCs in India warrants a closer examination, one that dispels common misconceptions and offers a more nuanced perspective. While wage inflation is a real phenomenon, it is also a global reality. One also needs to take cognizance of the maturing model where GCCs are moving up the value chain, embracing complex, specialised functions that warrant competitive compensation on a global scale.

While India boasts of a rich and diverse talent landscape in GCCs, opportunities and challenges in equal measure are present on account of the growing scale and demand. However, the innovative strategies adopted demonstrate the efforts invested for the future to build and sustain the talent pipeline.
