The past week witnessed notable developments across the tech domain. The addition of 7 Indian organizations in the AI Alliance remained the most significant move, proving India’s growing prowess in the global AI landscape. In the startup domain, the launch of the Bharat Startup Knowledge Access Registry (BHASKAR) initiative, aimed to enhance collaboration among key stakeholders within the entrepreneurial ecosystem remained the highlight.

A look at 5 key themes that emerged during the past week….

Building the AI/Gen AI ecosystem

The most notable development in the AI domain remained the addition of 7 members including - Infosys, IIT Madras research lab AI4Bharat, IIT Jodhpur, KissanAI, People+AI, Wadhwani AI and Sarvam AI, into the AI Alliance. The Alliance is dedicated to promoting open, safe and responsible AI. The move will enable these organizations to play a crucial role in the next wave of global AI innovation.

Another key move was the development of a brain-inspired analogue computing platform by researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) that can enable processing of complex artificial intelligence (AI) tasks on personal devices like laptops and smartphones. The platform can store and process data in an astonishing 16,500 conductance states within a molecular film.

Additionally, Lenovo Group launched an AI servers focused R&D lab in Bengaluru. The company also announced that it will start manufacturing AI servers at its plant in southern India. It has targeted annual production of 50,000 AI rack servers and 2,400 graphic processing unit (GPU) servers, which are designed specifically for resource-heavy tasks like machine learning.

Strengthening startups

The most significant development in the startup domain remained the launch of the Bharat Startup Knowledge Access Registry (BHASKAR) initiative. Launched under the Startup India programme, BHASKAR is a platform designed to centralise, streamline, and enhance collaboration among key stakeholders within the entrepreneurial ecosystem, including startups, investors, mentors, service providers, and government bodies. Every stakeholder will be assigned a unique BHASKAR ID, ensuring personalized interactions and tailored experiences across the platform.

Another key move remained the launch of the second cohort of Startup Accelerators of MeitY for Product Innovation, Development and Growth (Samridh) scheme. It is the MeitY’s flagship programme designed to foster the growth of software startups in India. Under this scheme, 125 startups will be provided funding support and mentorship. It provides a first round of funding of up to Rs 4 million.

Among states, the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) signed an MoU with adesso India Private Limited to mentor startups under KSUM and support their innovative projects in scaling up. The collaboration will open new avenues for startups to market their innovative products and services beyond their usual areas of operation.

Another key development highlighting India’s growing influence in the global AI domain, remained the selection of seven Indian startups Convrse, House of Models, Neural Garage, Orbo.ai, Phot.ai, Unscript AI, and Zocket, specializing in Gen AI by Amazon Web Services (AWS) for its Global Generative AI Accelerator program. As part of the accelerator program, the selected startups will receive up to $1 million in AWS credits. These credits will help the startups develop, train, test, and deploy their Gen AI solutions using tools such as Amazon SageMaker and Amazon Bedrock. India’s cohort represented the highest number of startups selected from any Asia-Pacific country.

Pushing semiconductor manufacturing

To leverage growing opportunities in the semiconductor domain, the Uttar Pradesh government announced the development of a semiconductor park in Noida near Jewar airport. The initiative aims to attract major global and domestic chip manufacturing companies to set up shop in India.

Among private players, TCS announced a collaboration with its parent company Tata Electronics to enhance India’s semiconductor production capabilities. TCS has a software-driven approach to chip research and engineering, which is expected to benefit Tata Electronics significantly once its manufacturing facility in Dholera, Gujarat becomes operational.

The Tata Group also announced a partnership with Analog Devices (ADI) in the field of semiconductor manufacturing. The partnership aims to accelerate development of cutting-edge technologies for electric vehicles and next-generation network infrastructure.

Collaborating to enable digital transformation

Two significant partnerships were forged to strengthen digital transformation. First, Infosys collaborated with Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) to spearhead its digital transformation initiative called DIVE (Digital Innovation and Value Enhancement). As part of the collaboration, Infosys will enable the creation of a cutting-edge NextGen Digital Platform, which will focus on delivering seamless omnichannel engagement and data-driven hyper-personalized experiences to LIC’s customers, agents and employees. 

Secondly, HCL Tech forged a global strategic partnership with Intellect Design Arena to bring domain-rich, technology solutions to financial institutions globally. The partnership focuses on leveraging data and AI to help organizations remain competitive and capitalize on the new wave of transformation. 

Combatting cybercrime

In response to a surge in cyber fraud, Assam announced the launch of India’s second National Cyber Forensics Lab (NCFL) at the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon. The initiative is part of a broader national effort to combat online crime and enhance law enforcement's ability to tackle cyber threats. The NCFL will not only provide technical assistance for investigating cybercrimes but will also serve as a training hub for law enforcement personnel, equipping them with the skills and tools required to address sophisticated cyber threats.
