  • Global patent filing continues to gain importance
    • Patent filing increased at a higher 2.7% to reach 3.55 million patents in 2023 compared to 2022. India continues to grow higher than the global average, recording the highest growth of 17.2% for 2023
    • Patent Grants crossed 2 million mark, with India leading the annual patents grants growth at 149.4% increasing its share in global grants by 2X to reach 3.8%
    • Computer technology maintains its top position in global patent filings, with India making an entry in the top 10 countries of patent origins for 2020-22 and taking the third spot in computer technology
    • Share of women patent continues to increase globally growing from 17.7% in 2023 from 17.1% in 2022, India maintains its share at 11.6% in 2023
  • India strengthens its position as a global innovation hub
    • Over 90K patents filed in FY24, with India registering seventh consecutive year of growth at 11.3%, 1.4X the CAGR for last decade
    • All time high of over 100K patents granted in India rising 3X in FY24 compared to last year, highlighting improving processes at Indian Patent Office
    • Indian Resident filers crossed the 55% mark in FY24 from 52.3% in FY23, growing 19% y-o-y
    • Tamil Nadu continues to showcase the mettle of conducive innovation supportive ecosystem and policies as it maintains its top position in total patent filing in FY24 with its share in total filing rising to 10.4% from 9.3% in FY23
    • USA maintained its top position in total PCT applications filed during FY24, with Japan replacing China at the second spot
  • AI the leading technology in focus for IP creation in India
    • 86K AI Patents filed during 2010-2025, accounting for over 25% of all technology patents filed in India
    • Number of AI Patents filed in India in 2021-2025 were 7X higher compared 2010-2015
    • Gen AI emerged as the leading sub technology in focus accounting for 28% of the AI patents filed during 2010-2025
    • Majority of the AI patents find convergence with other technologies with Location Tracking, Big Data, IoT, Autonomous Driving and Semiconductors being the top technologies 
    • 63% of the AI patents filed originated in India with another 17% being first filed in the US, reflecting increased preference for India as a first filing jurisdiction, over the years
    • Machine learning remains the most used techniques for AI patents with a share of over 55%, with Gen AI being the leading sub technology in ML
    • GANs and Text Generation are the leading areas in focus accounting for over 30% of the total Gen AI filing, respectively
    • Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing are the top functional applications accounting for over 90% of the AI patents
    • Across verticals, Transportation leads accounting for over 70% of the AI patents filed in India

 

  • Challenges and Recommendations
    • Significant improvement in patent filing process, but there is a huge gap compared to global standards, which needs more focused initiatives and stakeholder collaboration
    • The challenges:
      • Long patent filing timelines compared to global counterparts, despite relatively lower per capita patents
      • Lack of sufficient examiners at the India Patent Office that needs to be solved urgently to maintain the improving efficiency of the Indian Patent Office
    • Recommendations - Stakeholder collaboration is a crucial step towards reaching the global standards in patent filing
      • Maintain focus on IP Awareness and Education
      • Improve IP processes, patent search and Discovery
      • Strengthen IP protection and Enforcement
