This weekend was well spent with my two millennial children. One is aged 23 and has some early work experience and another aged 20 who is still starry-eyed about how her workplace should be and what her world of engagement should consist of.

As I spoke to them, a new work world just became a reality right in front of my eyes. The first thing I heard from them smacked my traditional knowledge out of the window. There is going to be a heightened appreciation for small tag teams or squads as they call them. Teams in which each individual identities are carefully preserved, recognized, and visible to all in the team. Teams that are compact in nature where workstreams are well woven, with a high degree of clarity. Compact teams where communication flows in an unhindered fashion. The key point-driven home is where each individual feels like the owner of his/her destiny.

As we spoke about team structures, leadership was not far behind. It is the core fulcrum of how the teams behave and perform. As we delved into the unending world of leadership behaviors, there were several nuggets that came out. But one thing that came out strong was – We need to have leaders who meet us as equals. Mind you this is a generation that is assertive, have a mindpower that matches beyond hierarchies, and have a wide variety of choices available to them. The behaviors I heard were, that we want leaders who are non-hierarchical, democratic, empathetic, have unconditional positive regard for us, leaders who have the ability to receive constructive criticism, are open to reverse mentoring, have respect for people, and are accessible. Perhaps the time has come that it is not Human “Resources”, but for us to think of humans as a Possibility

The third element that we extensively discussed was learning and exploration. It was very evident that we are walking fast into a work world where anything that can be replicated can be automated. Anything that has a pattern and structure can be put into an algorithm. Anything that doesn’t require emotions can be a machine. That took us on a path where we exchanged notes on what those roles of the future are. From mere digital, I heard the words - emotive digitization, inter-disciplinary science-based engagements, and creativity at work, from structured workflows the demand will be for jobs that require universal thinking and application

Recognition continues to be heightened by money. Money is not for basic and essential needs but money to satiate higher levels of motivators such as paid vacations paid sabbaticals and paid experiences. Recognition in the form of respect for personal space thus allowances for freelancing and gig working. Recognition of the need for ideal work surroundings, which is visualized by open-air spaces, green spaces, uncluttered private spaces, and spaces that encourage the intermingling of hobbies and work simultaneously.

In all it was an awe-inspiring afternoon for a mother with her children - I learned a lot from them that afternoon.
