Over the past two decades, the global recorded music industry, which is currently valued at over $26 billion, experienced significant growth, driven by the contributions of artists, composers, music producers, sound engineers, and support teams. Over the years, the industry has witnessed the use of various technologies to capture, produce, and distribute music, transforming the way we consume and interact with recorded music.

The recorded music landscape has evolved significantly, from the early days of analog recordings to the digital revolution that brought about the advent of CDs, MP3s, and streaming platforms. These technological advancements have not only made music more accessible but have also transformed the creative and production processes. Artists and composers have leveraged innovations in recording equipment, software, and digital editing tools to enhance their craft and reach a wider audience. However, the conventional approach to music creation still requires a considerable investment of resources, including studio time, professional sound engineers, and production expenses. The process involves multiple iterations of recording, editing, and refining compositions, often leading to lengthy production timelines and high costs.

Enter Generative AI

Generative AI is a transformative technology that is revolutionizing music creation. Powered by advanced machine learning algorithms, generative AI enables autonomous music generation, composition, and synthesis. It utilizes massive datasets and learns from existing compositions, allowing AI systems to create music that emulates various genres, styles, and moods. Generative AI-backed music generation tools have gained significant traction within the music industry. For instance, in April 2023, Claire Boucher, who goes by the name ‘Grimes’ within the pop industry, announced that she is willing to share 50% of the royalties with anyone who successfully creates an AI-generated song using her voice. The artist also said that she would consider releasing capella tracks for people so that they can train their music-generation software on those tracks. Renowned artists, composers, and music producers are also incorporating these tools into their creative workflows, embracing the potential for enhanced efficiency and inspiration. Universal Music Group (UMG), for instance, has partnered with Endel, a Gen AI sound wellness startup, to create AI-powered, artist-driven functional music.

Benefits of Using Gen AI-based Music Generation Tools

Gen AI-backed music generation systems provide composers with a wealth of musical suggestions, harmonization options, and automated composition features, streamlining the creative process and empowering artists to explore new musical territories. One of the remarkable advantages of generative AI in music creation is its potential to reduce the time, effort, and costs traditionally associated with the creative process. Composers can leverage generative AI to generate ideas, experiment with different musical elements, and refine compositions more efficiently. This efficiency allows artists to focus more on the artistic vision and spend less time on repetitive tasks, ultimately fostering greater creativity and exploration.

“It's never as good as it looks and it's never as bad as it seems.” - Tom Pollack

As generative AI becomes more integrated into the music industry, and more artists and composers start to collaborate with AI systems, lines between human creativity and machine-generated artistry are expected to get blurry. This would challenge the traditional notions of creativity and raise serious questions on the role of human agency in music creation. It would also raise crucial regulatory considerations around copyright protection, intellectual property rights, and fair attribution among others. While the collaboration between human musicians and generative AI is expected to open new horizons of exploration, innovation, and artistic expression, striking a balance between AI-driven innovation and the preservation of artistic integrity would become essential for the sustainable growth of the music industry.
