The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is seeking stakeholder inputs on the proposed draft Indian Standard on E-Commerce - Principles and Guidelines for Self-Governance (draft Standard).

This draft Standard aims to establish essential principles and guidelines for the self-governance of E-commerce operations in India, focusing on protecting the interests of consumers. The draft Standard covers crucial aspects across the entire e-commerce transaction lifecycle, including pre-transaction, contract formation, and post-transaction phases.

Key areas addressed in the Standard include:

  •  Registration requirements and KYC processes for sellers
  • Product listing and information disclosure requirements
  • Consumer consent and transaction review processes
  • Payment systems and recurring charge guidelines
  • Dispute resolution and consumer grievance handling
  • Anti-counterfeiting measures
  • Fair business practice principles

The deadline for stakeholder feedback on the draft Standard is February 20, 2025. The text of the Standard is attached below for your reference. We are requesting your suggestions, comments and inputs on the draft Standard. In case any changes are being proposed, please provide a justification or rationale.
