Pursuant to nasscom’s effort, the Government of Telangana has extended the exemption to the IT-BPM industry from the Telangana Shops and Establishments Act, 1988 for a duration of years w.e.f May 30, 2024. Please see the attached exemption notification dated June 07, 2024 for further details.

This exemption is pursuant to the exemption granted last year i.e., 2023 (G.O. Ms. No. 30) which expired on May 29, 2024. Importantly, these exemptions are a continuation of a previous exemption that had been in effect since 30.05.2013.

Consequently, nasscom team has been working closely with the Government of Telangana to ensure extension of this critical exemption which has been instrumental in facilitating business operations for the IT industry in the state of Telangana.

Under the exemption, sections 15, 16, 21, 23, and 31 of the Telangana S&E Act relating to opening and closing hours, daily and weekly work timings, among others, are not applicable to the IT/BPM industry. This exemption is crucial for the IT-BPM industry because it ensures flexibility for the industry to tailor its working arrangements with operational needs and client requirements.

Citing the position in Telangana as a useful precedent, nasscom is advocating a similar approach in other key states.
