Agriculture is the backbone of the India’s economy and has shown impressive growth over the last few decades. 5G technology will disrupt the agriculture sector benefiting the masses. More than half of the workforce in India is engaged in agriculture, but its contribution to GDP is under 20%. Few of the issues with efficiency of the present agriculture system can be resolved through technology.

The early stages of 5G will focus on enabling high-bandwidth connectivity. Before 5G infrastructure becomes more pervasive, centralized farms will be the most practical use cases. A large corporate farming operation can build a private 5G network to enable high bandwidth use cases and aggregation of data from integrated IoT sensors.

Some interesting use cases of 5G in Agriculture are:

  • Precision Agriculture and Aquaculture, using 5G powered modular IOT, enables smart automation for rapid analytics and precise field management that can monitor climate, soil moisture, plant health, pest control, water, and pH levels to ensure high yields.
  • Livestock Monitoring: 5G enabled sensors attached to farm animals can monitor animals’ health, feeding patterns, reproductive cycle, pests, and diseases increasing productivity of cattle.
  • Autonomous farming: AI-based data analytics will enhance connected smart irrigation technologies to optimize the consumption of resources. Autonomous tractors and weeding equipment will minimize human intervention, eliminate errors, and save energy.
  • 5G-Digital farming will incorporate AI/ ML algorithms to present actionable insights to the farmers and real time on-farm operational optimization by connecting the value chain and enabling flow of information from farmers to markets by using RFID and sensors.
  • Drones: 5G enabled drones can be deployed for remote sensing of farms analyzing nutrient status of crop through Digital Soil Mapping. Drones scan and detect pests, diseases and apply pesticides at target areas after analysis by an AI algorithm. GOI recently announced Kisan Drones Scheme to provide cheap drones for crop assessment, spraying pesticides. With 5G the capabilities of these drones can be enhanced to achieve autonomous and digital farming applications.

As the cellular-connected world transitions to 5G, smart farming will continue to expand. Data and predictive analytics will enable farmers to make choices yielding more productivity and efficiency.
