In the fight to stay healthy and fit everybody is exploring new ways to tap into the power to improve their overall health and fitness. Technology can give us an edge in our personal and as well as professional lives. One uses digital devices to improve their diet, track their fitness, and many more. At this time of social distancing social media has been the only tool for keeping one in touch with their loved ones and also to spend time when at home. All these technological advancements have improved a lot of things for us and made things easy for us but they are also affecting our mental health. There have been exhibit signs of technology overuse, lack of strong social connections, and many more because people don’t like going outside, they are happy with their phone and social media.

We Human Beings are social creatures and we need other companionship and support of others to thrive in our lives and the strength of our connection with other people has a lot of impact on our mental health and happiness. Being connected to others via Facebook, WhatsApp can boost up our self-worth and we can do everything in our comfort but it can pose a serious risk to our mental health and emotional health.

   There are many ways how Technology affects one’s mental health that are-

  1. SLEEP- Using a phone or a laptop late at night can mess your sleeping schedule and because of that people face stress problems and also sleeping disorders sometimes which might cause a lot of problems later on as excess of everything Is bad.

 For example- Research by NCBI revealed that using the mobile screen for at least 30 minutes before sleeping after the light is off and keeping your phone near your pillow are positively associated poor sleep quality and if there has been a major decline in the sleep hours it has a strong correlation with obesity, diabetes and many other disorders have been documented in the past 5-10 years.

  1. INADEQUACY ABOUT YOUR LIFE AND APPEARANCE– Sometimes looking at somebody's pictures and their lives on social media make us insecure about ourselves and our lives. One gets that feeling of envy and dissatisfaction with their lives and starts feeling depressed about that.

     3) ADDICTION- Addiction to everything is bad may it be technology. Excessive use of technology can cause a lot of problems to one’s mental health   and also emotional health. There is a considerable debate on addiction and abuse to smartphones among adolescents and its impact on health and it   was found by research by NCBI that smartphone addiction magnitude in India ranged from 39% to 44% as per fixed effects calculated. The age group   of 25-34 is found to have the highest usage of smartphones that is 62%. Recently in 2013, there were around 51 million people smartphone users in   Urban India and the rate of rising from the year 2012 was 90%. This shows how addicted are people to their phones. Smartphone abuse is increasing in the 21st century because more and more people enjoy passing their time on phones when they are free.

    4) FOMO-FEAR OF MISSING OUT- It’s a real thing now. Nowadays the popularity of social media and sharing everything that is happening in them   has led to a new sensation where everyone tends to share their daily lives and experiences which causes a lot of pressure on other people health         when they watch it because then they think why don’t they have such a life.

 

More than 3 billion people interact daily on social media and make use of technology so much while many of our exchanges are harmless but social media addiction is linked to a rise in mental health disorders especially in teenagers and also impact our well-being.

 

Many Research has postulated that one needs to limit the use of Technology, especially the use of social media. You don’t have to disconnect or delete your social media to protect yourself, you just need to balance everything and manage it does accordingly so that it does not affect your health. There are so many tips that can help

  1. Use an app to track how much time you spend on social media each day.
  2. Don’t bring your phone to the table and bed
  3. Turn off your phone when not in use and disable social media notifications
  4. Set your screen to night mode.

Technology can add limitless value to our lives especially if we use it mindfully. One in four people is struggling with mental health problems at some point in time in their lives. With the coronavirus pandemic and troubled economy, many are in crisis right now. So one needs to take care of oneself in various ways.
