A 5G ecosystem unlocks a host of opportunities for enterprises, including building better products and services while reducing time to market. The 5G ecosystem will bring together diverse industry partners to enable the convergence of IT infrastructure, connectivity and devices in a holistic manner.

Tech players together with service providers, device manufacturers and start-ups need to build a cohesive 5G ecosystem. Such 5G ecosystem will enable companies to launch new products or services to their customers backed by the 5G network, security, and application development tools.

Some pointers on the way forward for different stakeholders are discussed below:

Service Providers

  • 5G centric solutions - Creating 5G centric solutions, thereby providing enterprise customers an enhanced 5G experience will lead to increased 5G adoption. Defining and designing the applications itself changes when connectivity changes and offering different combinations of service packages to the enterprise customers as per the need will further enhance 5G deployment.
  • Green 5G - Key areas of consideration for green in 5G include optimization of RAN footprint, utilization of radio networks, cloud native design, construction of wireless using green tech, truck roll reduction through efficient OSS inventory management.

Device Manufacturers

  • Make in India - There would be great surge in Smartphones demand with the mass need to switch to 5G handsets and benefit from the network capabilities. Domestic ecosystem and local supply chain needs to develop, to have less dependence on global players. Enhancing local capabilities will open up the ecosystem to local players, remove entry barriers, and thereby bring down device and related costs.

Start-ups

  • Leverage new opportunities - Open RAN is expected to enable smaller players to participate in 5G network rollouts with India being a powerhouse in software. Start-ups need to use policies like the indigenous 5G test bed set up by the government for experimenting and demonstrating applications and use cases of 5G products in the country, which is being offered free of cost to the government-recognized MSMEs and start-ups for the next six months up to January 2023.
  • Partnerships – Start-ups also need to collaborate, co-create solutions, create local IPs through partnerships with stakeholders across the 5G ecosystem and create enterprise customer centric products and solutions for higher 5G deployment.

Through a robust 5G ecosystem, enterprises will be able to enjoy various benefits of 5G. In this unique multi-party network, interconnected partners will collaborate to bring new experiences into the hands of organisations.

Together with all the other players in the IoT environment, the ecosystem will be instrumental in driving 5G innovation that extends beyond current business cases. Enterprises will gain access to viable markets, test out a business case, evaluate the performance of applications and solutions, and develop use cases to solve new business challenges.
