The Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) has revolutionized the way organizations exchange data and conduct business. EDI is an electronic method of exchanging business documents between organizations. I. Introduction to Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)

Electronic Data Exchange refers to the electronic exchange of structured business data between organizations. The first EDI systems were introduced in the 1970s and since then, EDI has become an essential tool for businesses of all sizes. The use of EDI has grown rapidly, especially in industries such as retail, healthcare, banking and financial services, and supply chain management.

II. The 4 Major Components of EDI

  • EDI is comprised of four major components: translation software, communication software, trading partner agreement, and EDI standards.

  • EDIFACT: A UN-sponsored EDI standard used primarily in Europe.
  • X12: A widely-used EDI standard in North America.
  • TRADACOMS: An EDI standard used in the UK grocery trade.
