Cloud is the future. Businesses are fastening their pace of adopting cloud technology and the pandemic has only augmented it.

Even though it's been a while since businesses started recognizing the benefits of the cloud, only recently we have seen such a big jump in the rate of its adoption. Due to remote working and the break in the direct interaction between businesses and consumers, the market was forced to move from a traditional setup to cloud platforms. The technology transformation helped them to stay afloat as a business during the lockdown as well as gave them a new perspective of the direction the market is leading to.

The lockdown has also encouraged consumers to find new ways to fulfil their wants. And often they discovered that there are channels more convenient than the traditional ones to connect with sellers and service providers. Instead of searching for a physical store to make a purchase, they can now open App Store or Play Store, try out the most rated applications in a category and find the products or services they want. Now it has become the responsibility of businesses to become discoverable to the customers by

  • Finding their consumers and the platforms they are most active,
  • Connecting with them,
  • Introducing the products and services directly to them
  • and Offer them the best experience possible in terms of convenience and quality

It is not a coincidence that both the consumers and businesses found technology, especially the cloud, as the way forward. By recognizing the potential of the cloud, they have set off a few trends in the market.

Major cloud computing trends to look out for in 2022

1. Modernization

We are expected to see a faster rate of cloud adoption this year. Organizations will be migrating from traditional environments to the cloud, whether private or public, and new solutions will be majorly based on cloud technology. But, modernization has a broad meaning than technology transformation.

In the tech industry modernization generally means scalability, compatibility and automation. While scalability allows businesses to reach a wider audience, compatibility helps them to develop complex and trendsetting solutions. However, this won’t be sustainable without resource and cost management. Also, there are other challenges such as optimum efficiency and quality assurance. Enabling scalability and compatibility may negatively impact these four factors. Fortunately, we can keep them in check with the help of automation.

But facilitating scalability, compatibility and automation is itself a challenge. That's where the cloud comes into play. Due to its distributed nature and interoperability, the cloud can integrate different modules and create a complex solution with a unified front.

2. Hybrid models

When it comes to cloud migration, businesses had mainly two options. Private or public cloud solutions.

Public cloud solutions offer easy accessibility compared to their private counterparts. It also allows you to pay as you go. On the other hand, private cloud solutions offer better customization and flexibility compared to public ones. As a result, choosing a cloud solution had become a difficult task for most businesses as choosing one over the other means you were compromising on some front.

As a solution to this problem, major cloud solution providers like Amazon, IBM, and Microsoft came up with a new model that combines the advantages of both private and public cloud solutions. So now companies can store data, that need to be quickly and easily accessible, on public servers to offer a better experience to their customers. At the same time, they can store sensitive data on private servers with an extra layer of protection. Hybrid models help businesses to offer the best customer experience without compromising on privacy and security.

3. Serverless models

Traditionally an environment had to be set up first to deploy the codes and execute them. Such necessities brought up different issues like latency, resource management, downtime and cost control. By introducing serverless model, cloud providers are trying to solve such problems.

In a serverless model, cloud service provider allocates machine resources on-demand, taking care of the servers on behalf of their customers. Here “serverless” does not mean that the application runs without a server. Rather the servers are fully managed by the service provider and the developer or businesses don’t have to worry about configuration, monitoring and maintenance of the servers. Since computing is done in short bursts without holding resources in volatile memory, resources are not used all the time. As a result, businesses can save up the cost. Such models also provide scalability and elasticity.

4. Security

Methodologies and techniques like shift-left security, DevSecOps, AppSec, Cloud Security Posture Management(CSPM), Secure Access Service Edge (SASE), disaster recovery etc. are becoming popular in the cloud industry. As more businesses are moving away from traditional environments to the cloud, the focus of application security is also shifting. The security methodologies that were efficient in the past are overhauled to meet the new environment and advanced methods are formulated to fight its unique challenges. Since the tech industry as a whole moving towards the direction of the cloud, we can expect rapid developments in this field in the coming years.

5. Analytics & AI

Cloud computing has made it easier to collect a large quantity of data in real-time. These data can be sampled and analysed at any time and from anywhere with the help of technologies like AI, machine learning and deep learning. Collecting and analysing such a large quantity of data was not possible with traditional technologies. Even if it was possible, the task was intensive in terms of resource and cost and it took a long time to execute.  With the processing power of AI and the advantages of the cloud, we can expect some exciting possibilities to emerge in 2022.
