The NASSCOM Cloud Summit 2021 had a session on an important topic that explored how companies are building cloud skills to enable their cloud transformation journey. The panel had leaders from two end-user enterprises - Aditya Birla Group and Fidelity Investments (FMR India) - and one leader from the technology industry - IBM. The discussion focused on how each end-user enterprise has seen its cloud journey evolve over the last 5-7 years and how are companies building relevant cloud skills within their organizations. Here are a few key learnings:

  • Requires a central Enterprise Cloud Team that will drive cloud standards & operating processes, work across business groups to integrate all the requirements and embed a culture of change across the organisation stack
  • Platform approach: For everything from containers, APIs & data to security, reliability & observability – this will help drive cloud transformation at scale
  • Collaboration & sharing of best practices across different customer segments / business groups to simplify migration paths
  • Meticulous planning: Establishing strong foundational capabilities - network setups, integration, security, architecture, etc.
  • Answer some strategic questions:
    • Define objectives: Why do we want to do it and what does it mean for us (value)?
    • How will we drive cloud transformation @ scale?
    • Do we need to run parallel systems as we migrate or do we do a lift & shift? Or do we look at a complete transformation approach?
    • Address issues around compliance, regulations; risks & the costs involved; information security & disaster recovery
    • Build capabilities: Cloud administrators, architects, security specialists, AIOps, etc.
    • Learning, upskilling - tech & non-tech
    • How do we hire & retain cloud talent?

Some of the most relevant cloud skills to be developed include:
