Continuing from my previous blog “Gen AI’s Innovation Story on the Intellectual Property Board”, let us first finish the discussion on top filers, I highlighted the top 3 from China in my last blog, other key filers in the image below.

Now the obvious answer US takes the second stop and Yes India secures a position in the top 5

US takes the second spot with around 6,300 patent families between 2014 and 2023, followed by the Asian Countries - Republic of Korea, Japan and India.

  • IBM (fifth), Alphabet/Google (eighth) and Microsoft (10th) are the top US companies in terms of GenAI patents.

Software leads in terms of Application Area, while image/video category leads among the different GenAI modes

In terms of application areas software leads in patents followed by life sciences and document management and publishing.

Patent Families across various applications

Among the different GenAI modes, most patent families belong to the image/video category with almost 18,000 patent families in this mode added over the last decade, with more than 5,100 patent families in 2023 alone.

Among the different GenAI modes, most patent families belong to the image/video category with almost 18,000 patent families in this mode added over the last decade, with more than 5,100 patent families in 2023 alone.

Now if we go into the tech part of it, the next question that comes to mind is Which Gen AI model has the most patents? Among GenAI models, most patents belong to GANs. Between 2014 and 2023, there were 9,700 patent families of this model type, with 2,400 patent families published in 2023 alone. This is followed by VAEs and LLMs with around 1,800 and 1,300 new patent families respectively.
