GST Rate Cut on Medical Supplies

Paying heed to the increasing cases of coronavirus patients, NCP leader Supriya Sule on Monday asked Union FM Nirmala Sitharaman to cut off Goods and Service Taxes (GST) on equipment used to treat the patients.

On her twitter handle she posted that residents are already struggling with economic crises caused due to coronavirus outbreak and nationwide lockdown, waiving of GST will provide a bit of relief to this miserable situation.

“Medical Equipment including Masks, Thermometers, Suits, Sanitizers, Caps and Gowns widely used during the Corona Virus Crisis are taxed b/w 5% to 18% GST. The Common Man is extremely scared and with the economic crisis arising due to the #coronavirus has made things worse. (1/2)”

“If GST is waived off for the essential equipment and medicines used in the treatment hereby the prices would come down and the burden of the Common Man will reduce. Requesting Hon. Nirmala Sitharaman Ji to kindly cancel the GST on the said equipment. (2/2)”

Talking about the GST on pharmaceuticals, medicines are taxed at four different GST rates i,e, Nil, 5%, 12% and 18%. Medicines having direct reference with the treatment of blood and its other variations and other contraceptives invite ‘Nil’ GST whereas medicines having nicotine in its composition attract 18% GST.

Medicines that are entitled as ‘life-saving drugs’ attract the lowest 5% GST (if Nil is excluded). Such medicines include oral rehydration salts, vaccines, as well as medicines such as those used to treat diabetes, tuberculosis, HIV-AIDS, malaria, etc. So far no medicine is taxed at the highest tax rate slab i.e. 28% GST rate.

Till now the 1000 corona positive cases in India are confirmed and among all the states the highest number of patients are in Maharashtra and Kerala. The virus caused 27 deaths in India as per the recent reports. To combat the COVID-19 calamity prevailing in India, PM Narendra Modi has announced the nationwide lockdown for 21 days starting from 24 March till 15 April. Indian government has seized all the borders that it was sharing with Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal and Myanmar to curb the entry of outsiders in India.
