Indian telecom companies are prepared to implement the 5G network and technology services. They are set to conduct trials across the country for which the Department of Telecom (DoT) had allotted trial spectrums last year.

While the auction of the spectrum is set to start in end of July and to be allotted to successful bidders, it would be the first time ever that India will reserve a part of spectrum for private 5G networks. The enterprises would also be allowed to lease the spectrum.

Public 5G network is intended for use by public with numerous users on the nationwide network. While a private 5G network could be intended for private use by a business unit or a whole organization. Private network could also be categorized as per a ‘location’ (say a building or a region).

Some other differences between the public and private 5G networks have been listed below:

While there may have been discussions going on between different telecom companies, as the Broadband India Forum (BIF) have cleared recently- the private and public 5G networks are separate entities of services and non-competing with each other.

Recently, the government also approved the auction of air waves which will offer 5G telecom services, including ultra high-speed internet setting up captive 5G networks (network set up for private use by a single organization) by tech firms.

While the 5G spectrum in nine frequency bands will be auctioned to telecom operators like Airtel, Jio, etc., enterprises and tech firms for the time being will be allowed to take the 5G spectrum for their captive non-public network on lease from the telecom companies. A direct allocation to enterprises will follow a study for demand and sector regulator TRAI's recommendation on aspects, such as pricing and modalities of such allocation.

In all, 5G has huge potential when it comes to India. As highlighted by the union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, India will get 5G services - 10 times faster than 4G by March 20235, a day after the cabinet cleared the auction for the 5G spectrum. With a validity of 20 years, a total of 72 GHz of spectrum is set to be put to auction by July end.5
