Digital Public Infrastructure or DPIs are omnipresent nowadays. Across various sectors, there are various DPIs which are available to solve citizen specific problems and helping India become a global leader.

One is well aware of DPIs in healthcare sector which especially helped the Indian citizens in tracking the spread of covid as well as vaccinating for it. In general, DPIs in healthcare aim to improve healthcare accessibility, enable better disease surveillance, and streamline administrative processes.

Some key DPIs for the healthcare sector include –

1. Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) aims to develop the backbone necessary to support the integrated digital health infrastructure. The idea is to bridge the gap amongst different stakeholders in the healthcare ecosystem. With the existing infrastructure, one can digitally identify people, doctors, and healthcare facilities, facilitate electronic signatures, ensure non-repudiable contracts, make paperless payments, securely store digital records, and streamline healthcare information through digital management.

ABDM is the integrated digital health infrastructure, with growth of over 800X in ABHA IDs registered since 2020.

ABHA ID is a unique 14 digit number that identifies the citizen’s participation in India’s healthcare ecosystem. There has been an 800X growth in ABHA IDs, 109X growth in verified professionals registered with ABDM and over 190X growth in facilities verified in ABDM since 2020. ABDM has been adopted by the private sector as well.

2. eSanjeevani provides access to medical professionals for the citizens located even in the remotest part of the country, providing direct & assisted tele-consultation. It provides quick and easy access to doctors and medical specialists from a smartphone. This is a step towards digital health equity to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC). This platform leads to reduced cost due to online consultations and helps in improved efficiency of healthcare system and utilization of doctors.

3. CoWIN has revolutionized vaccine registration, scheduling, and monitoring, ensuring efficient distribution and data-driven decision-making. It is estimated that it saved more than 3.4 million lives in 2021, by undertaking a nationwide COVID-19 vaccination campaign at an unprecedented scale covering 1.4 bn citizens. Future plans of CoWIN include upgradation to build an organ donation and blood donation platform.

Aarogya Setu is a mobile application developed to track the spread of Covid-19 infection rate and help users take preventive actions. Aarogya Setu, post Covid, has been modified to register for ABDM and book tele-consultation through eSanjeevani now.

DPIs continue to transform the country’s digital infrastructure and solve critical citizen centric issues. Not only that, but they also have the capability to solve key global challenges including key UN Sustainable Development Goals, creating a lasting impact across the globe.
