In my last blog I discussed about the key global patent filing trends. Taking that discussion forward lets now talk about the patent filing trends in India.

Technology Patents Lead In India

Interestingly, India witnessed a patent filing of 584k patents over 2010-2022, out of which 266k are filed across various technology domains. Out of these 266k patents, 160k patents are filed across various emerging technologies.

Emerging Technology Patents Gaining Traction Year-on-Year

Emerging Patents accounted for over 60% of the technology patents over 2010-2022p, with its share witnessing a continuous rise on an annual basis.

Another key trend that came to light was US coming as the leader in terms of first filing jurisdiction i.e. out of all technology patents which are filed in India, 34% are first filed in the US.

AI and IoT the leading technology areas

In terms of specific sub technology areas - AI and IoT continue to lead the emerging technology patents growth story accounting for a share of over 50%. Pattern Analysis and Image Analysis emerged an important area accounting for over 28% of the share. Number of Blockchain related patents witnessed the highest CAGR of 25%+ (though on a small base) over the 2010-2022p.
