Across industries, companies are making use of cutting-edge technologies like Industry 4.0, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain, Machine Learning (ML), among others. This is all the more prevalent in the ER&D industry and enterprises are moving along the path of complete digitalization in a much faster pace than previously anticipated. Digital engineering is a key component of the ER&D industry and the industry is constantly growing and evolving with the increasing proliferation of digital engineering.

Digital engineering in the ER&D industry can be categorized into two segments.

Digital Engg 2

On one hand, there is engineering of digital products itself. These include products which are engineered to be intelligent, cloudified, connected, and personalized. These products, services, and experiences may include key digital themes such as software defined products and processes, next-gen user experiences, connected ecosystems, as-a-service models, and connected manufacturing, among others.

These products utilize the innovative technologies along with the hardware and create meaningful and digital products and systems and improve the traditional models for the enterprises.

On the other hand, one can leverage digital technologies in the engineering processes, and these may include solutions such as predictive maintenance, 3D printing, process automation, virtual/ simulated engineering, AI-enabled processes, and supply chain traceability, etc.

Various digital technologies are used as enablers to achieve the goal of digital transformation of enterprises, and these include IoT/IIoT, Automation, AI/ML, AR/VR, Blockchain, Cloud, 5G technologies, among others.

ER&D enterprises are increasingly using advanced digital technologies to improve their processes, which has been possible due to the growing convergence of technology and business operations, technology-related transformations, and emerging business models to improve efficiencies.

Digital engineering provides many opportunities and competitive advantages for an organisation over others, making them more agile, customer-centric, innovative, efficient, and streamlined. It is inevitable that many organisations are on the fast track towards digital engineering and transformation and are fast moving towards digital transformation of their organisations.
