A Blog Series on Healthcare Innovation Challenge

Hospitals and Healthcare companies are innovating themselves and developing interesting use cases that can solve many large-scale problems. Healthcare Innovation Challenge identifies such interesting use cases and invites applications to provide an effective solution for them. Below are 5 of the 10 use cases identified:

  1. Comprehensive Patient Care / OPD Automation

In hospitals, we are still running on pen and paper-based registration creating a lot of operational challenges. As a part of regular care, tracking patients’ health, monitoring it, and providing them medicine at the right time is of utmost importance. Providing emergency services and maintenance of health records are also gaining importance. These services have now become essential for an efficient treatment process and hence an effective technique is required that can integrate with HIS to automate this tedious process.

About the Use Case

A solution that allows automating patient registration process through Aadhaar or government ID. It helps in registering patients, provides payment integration, informs patients of the next step, books tests, medicine reminders, and performs many such functions during an emergency.

  1. Prescription Digitization using voice recognition

OPD is a regular activity in most hospitals and usually, a heavy rush is observed during these OPDs. It has been observed that the doctor gets more occupied with jotting down the prescription rather than listening to the patient. So, a voice recognition-based digitized prescription using the available templates can help in maintaining patients’ records in digital form and help patients in understanding the prescriptions better. It has been observed that 35% of patients that gets out of OPD don’t get converted to the hospital so automating this system and linking it with the doctor’s dashboard will support doctors. By using this automated system they can schedule the appointment and assign a nurse for basic checks and can easily do patient tracking.

About the Use Case

The digital prescription solution allows doctors to make a digital prescription in a few seconds and in a standard format. Voice recognition capabilities help in writing the prescription where machine learning helps in suggesting frequently used medicines.

  1. Cashless OPD Expense Management

India spends around 23 billion a year on OPD management and this spending is growing by 13% if we talk about insurance cover only 0.5% is covered under the OPD expenses. The major reason for the same is the fragmented market and the behaviour that needs to be changed towards the adoption of the digital model rather than the paper model.

About the Use Case

Out of pocket OPD expense management continues to be a problem for the payer. Getting provider and patient payer on the same platform is still a task that needs to be addressed through an agnostic platform that can work in both online and offline mode.

  1. Inpatient volume prediction based on Outpatient volume

Hospitals often face challenges with the availability of beds for inpatients. Pandemic has also emphasized the importance of operational efficiency in the hospital to cater to the larger demand and therefore proper data management is required on how to predict the requirement of beds based on outpatients.

About the Use Case

The solution can predict the future count of beds per department based on outpatients’ volume, demography, and diagnosis data. It can also help in reduce patient wait time, provide them with a better experience. It also helps in giving input to the marketing team on utilization for promotion activities. It can further help the business to predict the year-on-year revenue generation.

  1. Integration of Multiple Equipment data to create a data lake

Medical equipment captures a lot of data related to patients who undergo multiple tests using these equipments. Data in these equipments are processed individually and take their own time. The overall data aggregation is also a major task but If the data across these medical devices can be combined it will create a data lake that can be further analyzed to create many important statistics about the patient and its treatment. Hence, a platform where all this data can be collected and analyzed can create a revolutionary impact.

About the Use Case

This solution helps in the integration of multiple equipment data sources to create a data lake.  Patient solutions like oncology are data-heavy and need the collation of a lot of patient data. Different pieces of equipment used in the treatment process work in silos hence their integration is of utmost importance.

We will discuss the next 5 use cases in our next blog:
