Compete To Be Better Than What You Were Yesterday- This is healthy competition.

Its YOU Vs. YOU

Why is he earning more than me? Why is he more successful than I am? What am I doing wrong? – Each of us at some point have asked these questions. But should these be the questions that we should be asking?

Compare ourself against others is easy but the issue is when we do that, we judge ourself based on their values and metrics. The problem with this is even if you win, you only do something that’s important to them, not you.

As my Papa said, “Life is a competition, but it’s not a race against anyone else. Rather, the real journey is only against yourself and unrealized potential”. This is what Jay Z means when he raps, “I look in the mirror, my only opponent.”

Stop comparing yourself to anyone. Instead, focus on getting better at what you do. Imagine, if you outdo yourself every day, wouldn’t that also make you better at what you do every day? And isn’t that a better use of your time? Pretty soon, you would become the best version of you.

Successful people practice this. How do you think they became successful? They sure didn’t do it by slacking off and waiting for lady luck to strike or making other people’s success as their benchmarks. They worked hard and persevered each day. They didn’t let challenges stop them from reaching their goals but instead used these challenges to make them stronger by learning from them. They also honed their skills and talent to outdo themselves each day. They sure didn’t stop to compare themselves with others, because that would be. waste of time and would take time away from working on their own projects.

Rather than competing against others, chase your dreams, your future self. Be inspired by Matthew McConaughey who chases his ideal self, ten years in the future. On receiving Oscar in 2014, he said says, “Every day, every week, every month, and every year of my life, my hero is always 10 years away. I’m never going to beat my hero. I’m not gonna attain that. I know I’m not! That’s just fine with me, because it keeps me with somebody to keep on chasing.” Isn’t this simply AWESOME!

The best part of competing against yourself is that you set your own values and metric, you choose the goals that fit you best, and what you really want to compete on — and what you don’t. Move forward but only evaluate yourself based on meaningful things. Smile, nod, and then forget it when other people try to entice you into competing. Only you can decide what really matters to you

And, yes, sometimes you lose or you might do worse than you did before. Not every day will be about moving forward, some days, it’s just enough not to take a step backward. And voila, others, when you least expect it, you bound forward.

Be the inspiration rather than sour grape over what you don’t have yet. Appreciate the things that you have now and focus on how you can improve them.

Don’t mind if you’re not in the top ten successful people yet, because it won’t be long when you’ll be the inspiration for others to work harder. Go ahead and challenge yourself and practice being the best and success will follow.
