1. NTT DATA recently conducted a masterclass with the student community across India and US. In your opinion, how partnership with universities contributes towards building a strong workforce?

It was indeed a wonderful experience to connect with students. I believe these programs address skill gaps and help them understand various career options available from entry-level to advanced technical positions. Students can access work-based learning experiences which increases the likelihood of employment and lets them focus on critical thinking, communication skills and time management. These are as important as technical skills. The educational enrichment and credentials they get from such programs creates a pipeline of informed students who are aware of their chosen career path at the outset and it is easier for them to transition from a university to a workplace.

2. What are the technologies you think potential employees should be skilled in before entering into the IT industry?

There is no definite and time-tested answer to that questions as in our experience technologies keep changing at a fast pace. What we need today is transformative technology stack to manage the business goals and drive them based on outcomes and overall impact created. The industry is welcoming the mix of automation, analytics, and AI to supercharge the next generation processes and create market differentiation. In terms of technology, what was relevant yesterday may not be much in demand today and what really matters is your ability to unlearn and learn something new before your customers ask for it. AI, Data Science, Machine Learning fundamentals, Python, DevOps, Cloud Computing, Blockchain and RPA are some of the technologies in demand. But remember that organizations equally give importance to ‘human intelligence’ to deliver value.

3. NTT DATA is playing a pivotal role in innovation, engaging with their employees. How are you moving towards innovation with programs like Academia-Industry connect?

At NTT we have a dedicated team of 5,000 research professionals located in our research and development (R&D) facilities worldwide and a $3.6 billion investment in R&D. We bank on Innovation  to provide “Foresight” to our clients, which is one of our guiding principles and to create unique market differentiation. For employees and future innovators, we provide freedom to think and space to create through organization wide platforms where we provide guidance and mentoring from innovation leaders that encourage employees to think of innovative ideas to solve complex challenges.

We collaborate with world-class academic institutions and startups as part of our research and development activities. Embracing an open innovation approach, we strive to innovate at the intersection of industry, academia, and startups. We have an R&D and Innovation team in Boston, in residence at the MIT Media Lab – known as the Boston Exponential Hub, and the research materials and newsletters are a great source of information for our employees interested in emerging technologies. This also helps keeps NTT DATA at the forefront of innovation, which also include MIT resources that we can leverage for learning and engagement. We are now extending similar innovation programs through mutually beneficial partnerships with other universities and can produce groundbreaking research and innovation to drive economic growth and create better skilled workforce.

4. Is strong academia connect a route to build talent pool for future? Please share your thoughts

Absolutely! There is always a demand for good talent and disruptive ideas. A strong academia partnership bridges the gap and connects us to the talent pool where the next big idea may come from. Organizations that are hungry for ideas must tap into the inquisitive young minds of the academia as they probe deeper by asking “why” and come from a discovery-driven culture.

5. Please share your leadership motto for students.

Leadership is one of the most essential skills and it’s an art. It requires a combination of team work, learning, good observation, proactive, transparency, strong communications, confidence, being inclusive and always in control of yourself. One can practice leadership through opportunities that exists everywhere such as in a school, at home, in workplace, etc. John Maxwell once said that “Leadership is influence” and the title doesn’t matter. A leader’s role is to transform organization’s vision into reality. As a future leader, you should always be ready to transform yourself before you try to lead and transform others.
