In recent years, a career in digital marketing has become one of the glamorous new avenues that has emerged from the technological age. Traditional marketers, techie geeks and young creatives alike have all found refuge in the glorious new opportunities digital marketing offers. However as with any new field, there is much confusion regarding what new avenues it opens up.

Here are some major digital marketing positions open in the field:

  • Content marketer

The basic outline of this job does not differ much from traditional marketing roles; this person is still in charge of content and copy. However, key differences occur in the style and medium in which this content is expressed. Digital content marketers have interactive adverts and social media platforms at their disposal, as well as dynamic audio-visual content opportunities such as Facebook live or Insta stories.

  • Search Engine Marketing Executive / Manager (SEO and PPC)

This job is very important because it involves ensuring that a client’s social media, website and brand are more visible on the internet by optimizing how they appear in search engines. Search engine optimization (SEO) experts analyze data to conclude what key terms can make a brand more visible and Pay-per-click (PPC) experts buy up spaces on search engines, blogs etc to make the brand more visible.

  • Brand strategist

This job requires an expert who understands all platforms across digital mediums: Social media, blogs, forums, websites, email, etc and is able to create a comprehensive and consistent marketing strategy for a brand across all these. This person will need some experience in copy editing, video and photography, financial data, logistics and much more and is a very demanding job.

  • Data analyst / Analytics manager

This person will need to have an understanding of statistics, psychology and computer science in order to draw conclusions about consumer behavior based on consumer generated data across digital interfaces. It is not an easy job as it involves the ability enormous data sets. Their insights can be very valuable in digital marketing as it can ensure information is being conveyed to consumers efficiently.

  • Social Media executive and Social media designer

This job is similar to content marketer, however this person’s expertise lies expressly in connecting with consumers over social media. This person will be able to direct and shape a brand’s instagram, snapchat, facebook, pinterest and other spaces to ensure that the brand is conveying the right image in the best way. This job requires great interaction and consumer skills and the best social media marketers are able to engage customers to create user-generated content.

  • E-commerce manager

Think of this as a digital sales manager. This person’s task is to generate sales on the internet by overseeing a team of web and software developers who make the client’s website easily accessible and aesthetic. They need to ensure the brand is portraying a cohesive, clear image to customers. Their role can also involve email marketing, and extend into the responsibilities of a digital marketing manager, who oversees all aspects of the digital marketing operation.

These six major roles are only the tip of the iceberg on the digital marketing landscape. Other careers in digital marketing include customer relations, graphic design, web developer and designer, and more. This field is so new that you can carve a new niche for yourself and pioneer an entirely new career in digital marketing.
