Power BI Dataflows

In the Power BI service, the set of entities or tables that are designed, and maintained in workspaces is called a Dataflow. Dataflows can be used to link with business data from different sources, filter the data, change it, and then upload it to the Power BI database.

We can add, modify tables, and manage data update schedules, directly through a workspace in which our dataflow was designed.

After creating dataflow, we can use Power BI service and Power BI desktop for creating apps, reports, datasets, and dashboards depending on the information you keep in Power BI dataflows, and by that, we get results into the business movements.

Follow 3 important steps to use a Dataflow:

  1. With the help of Microsoft tools, create the dataflow.
  2. Schedule the reload periods of the data, which you want to get to your dataflow.
  3. With the help of Power BI Desktop, make a dataset using your dataflow.

I’m providing the details of each step and about the tools given to finish each step.

Designing a Dataflow:

First, Start the Power BI service in a portal, and then choose a workspace from the nav pane on the left. We can also design a new workspace, for creating new dataflow.

After you are in a workspace, there is a ‘+ Create’ button in the upper-right corner of the screen. Click the ‘+create’ button, and then choose Dataflow from the drop-down menu.

There should be only one owner of any dataflow that is, the person who creates the dataflow. The owner can only edit the dataflow. All workspace members, who have to write or read guideline that can link to the dataflow, from the Power BI Desktop itself.

Addition of Entities:

The entity is a group of fields, which are used for storing data like a table in the database. After choosing a data source, you are reminded to give the connection settings, like which account to use while connecting to the data source.

After connection, we can choose the data we want to use for our entity. When you select data and a source, Power BI  Training will later connect again to the data source, for keeping updated data in your dataflow, at the time you choose later in the setup procedure.

After choosing the data, the Dataflow editor can be used to change or shape that data, into the required pattern for use in your dataflow.

Using the dataflow Editor

After choosing the data for your entity, with the help of Power Query editing experience, which is the same as Power Query Editor in Power BI desktop, we can change our selected data into a shape that works best for our entity.

Dataflows and the Common Data Model (CDM)

Dataflows entities consist of new tools, that help to map your business data easily to the Common Data Model, improve it with Microsoft and mediator information and get simple access, to machine learning.

These new abilities can be supported, to provide brilliant and applicable results to our business data. After completing any changes in the Edit Queries step, we can map columns from our data source tables to common entity fields, as given by the CDM. These common entities have a Known plan, as specified by the CDM.

To attach the CDM with our dataflow, select the ‘Map to Standard’ transformation, in the Edit Queries dialog. You can select the common entity that you want to map, in the Map Entities screen.

If you map a source column to a common field, the standard field name is given to the source column. The column is renamed if the name is not the same. And the Source column gets the common field data.

All standard fields that are not mapped, get zero values for keeping the common data model standard entity. You click the save option in the menu, after completing the selections and entity and its data controls are ready to save.

You can create many entities by choosing the Add entities button, and you can modify entities to process the queries and entities
