Should you be Modest?
Should you be Modest?

Let us understand modesty in a bit more detail.

The moment you hear someone say a line about someone - He or She is a modest person.

What comes to your mind?

That the person being talked about is a "good" person. He would not be self-promoting, he would be calm and so on. You would like to speak to them and so on.

Now let's twist the situation a bit.

Imagine you are taking an interview to finalize a role for your team.

You ask a question - On a scale of 1 to 10, how much would you rate yourself for xyz skill..

Candidate A says - I believe I would rate myself 7, given that there are still a lot of areas I have to learn and grow.

Candidate B says - I would rate myself 9.

Now, you also know that both these responses are subjective. If candidate A is modest, but he is good, he still might rate himself at 7. If candidate B is good as well but he is not shy, he would rate as 9.

Now, ask yourself - will you be comfortable in hiring Candidate A?

I am not waiting for the answer you give :)

You might feel the candidate A is an "average" person and B is "good". So what changed?

It is the same modesty which attracts you to good people, but introduces doubt when you are hiring?

But I would like to say that as interviewers, we have to also understand people better.

We have to be good at evaluating people and their behaviours in a short time of 30 mins.

Culture fit is the most important thing.

Numbers are never subjective but in this case, they are, because there are two people, with their own different personality characteristics are giving out subjective numbers!

Do let me know what you think. Agree/Disagree/Strongly Agree/ Strongly Disagree

And what about on a scale of 1 to 10?

Be Modest. Or Better yet, don't be.  :-)

Cheers!
