The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) had called for stakeholders’ inputs on the Indian Standard on Online Consumer Reviews — Principles and Requirements for their Collection, Moderation and Publication (the Standard) in October. The Standard offers requirements to be followed by organisations that publish consumer reviews online, detailing good practices throughout the review process, i.e., collection, moderation and publication. The Standard gives recommendations with the aim of increasing consumer trust in online consumer reviews and improve the purchase decisions of consumers.

Our suggestions inlcuded making changes in the text of the Standard with the perspective of making the Standard implementable with the least impact to the industry's ease of doing business. For example, clarifying that consumer experience date needs to be published only in cases where it has been collected, distinguishing between purchased reviews and rewarded reviews, reducing the minimum time period for which records of a removed review must be retained for etc.

Our detailed submission to BIS is attached.

BIS has responded to our suggestions and will be publishing the revised Standard in the coming weeks.
