The Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC) has recently developed a voluntary standard for assessing and rating the robustness of AI systems in telecom networks and digital infrastructure (draft standard). Attached below is a copy of the draft standard, on which the TEC has invited stakeholder feedback.

Previously, in July 2023, the TEC published a standard for "Fairness Assessment and Rating of Artificial Intelligence Systems" (No. TEC 57050:2023), on which nasscom provided industry feedback (click here). This Standard outline detailed procedures for assessing and rating artificial intelligence systems for fairness.

The proposed draft standard on assessing robustness of AI systems includes the following key components:

  • First, an approach to evaluating the robustness of AI models in critical applications, focusing on metrics associated with robustness such as resilience to data shifts, integrity, reliability, explainability, transparency, privacy and security.
  • Second, a structured robustness assessment framework to identify vulnerabilities and puts forth mitigation strategies, to enable AI systems to withstand adversarial conditions and maintain consistent performance.
  • Third, a rating methodology is introduced to quantify and benchmark the robustness of AI systems offering telecom operators, developers, and policymakers a standardised approach to enhance trust and safety.

While the standard focuses on telecom and digital infrastructure, the core principles and elements of robustness in AI are universally applicable. This makes the standard relevant even for other sectors and applications, where AI plays a critical role in optimising operations, ensuring security, and delivering reliable performance.

The deadline for public comments on the proposed standard is 15th December 2024. Kindly provide your written inputs on the draft standard, structured along the three key components of (1) Metrics associated with robustness (2) Robustness assessment framework and (3) Rating methodology to sudipto@nasscom.in and ananya@nasscom.in before 10th December 2024.
