Democratization of Generative AI (Gen AI)

The term ‘democratized generative AI’ has gained currency amidst the changing landscape of artificial intelligence. Generative AI (Gen AI) is a technology capable of generating content in different forms: text, audio, video, and image. And its democratization refers to its easy accessibility to the general public. A study by Gartner says that by 2026, more than 80% of enterprises would have deployed Gen AI in their processes, whereas it was just 5% in 2023. Quite a huge spike!

Factors contributing to the democratization of gen AI are:

Cloud - Cloud platforms allow firms to adjust the size of their gen AI workloads as necessary. Enterprises can avoid making large upfront investments in AI-specific processors like GPUs by availing the services of cloud service providers.
Open source initiatives - The availability of pre-trained models such as OpenAI’s GPT or models from Hugging Face; contributions from a global community of developers; and transparency have helped in gen AI democratization.
User-friendly interface - It allows even those with little or no technical experience to use AI tools smoothly (e.g., Google Colab, RunwayML).
Education - Learning about AI and using it has become easier for the audience. Thanks to the plethora of online courses available, that too at affordable rates.

Benefits of Gen AI Democratization:

Creativity - helps in brainstorming ideas for writers; can create beautiful visuals from models like DALL-E; can compose lyrics for music; develop game characters; and so on.
Enhances productivity - gen AI is quite useful in automating tasks, thus saving time.
Improving accessibility - the democratization of gen AI would allow small enterprises and startups access to these technologies, hence creating a level playing field.
Community collaboration - such collaboration promotes a spirit of entrepreneurship by allowing the exchange of ideas and creativity among them.

The future of democratized gen AI:

With continuous improvement in technology and more efficient gen AI models, it is likely to bring higher-quality content with less consumption of computational resources.
Low-code or no-code platforms will become more prevalent. These platforms require very minimal coding, therefore expanding the user base.
AI models will become more adaptable to users’ preferences (through adaptive learning), resulting in more relevant outputs.
Government and regulatory bodies will frame policies and guidelines to address concerns like privacy, bias, and IP.
With AI becoming more and more prominent, educational institutes will include AI literacy in their curricula so that students can comprehend and utilize AI from a young age.
Improved accessibility will encourage AI-driven startups, creating competition in the market and fostering economic growth.

Conclusion:

The democratization of gen AI is breaking the barriers by granting people access to it. There is no doubt that there are threats as well, such as loss of data, misuse of information, and copyright issues. However, one cannot deny the massive benefits it could bring to us. As WNS says, “it is not just about the accessibility of technology, but about re-defining how organizations operate and make decisions’’.
