These are the voyages of the star ship Enterprise. Its 5-year mission: to explore different new worlds. To look out for new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before!

Growing up, watching Star Trek every Sunday, I had this intro by-hearted. It was just a Sci-Fi entertainment. Little did I know that I will get to see a real Star ship in my lifetime when SpaceX started with its crazy innovations and ideas for space exploration.

Russia was the first to start the Space program in 1957 (Just imagine the first-mover advantage they have, as of 2021). In the last 10 years, a lot has changed in Space technology. During the COVID period, the world has seen at least 25 Orbital missions from SpaceX, launching hundreds of satellites for its Starlink internet network. The year also saw Indian space policy being framed (IN-SPACe) for private players, and companies like Skyroot, Dhruva Space, Pixxel, Kawa Space, Earth2Orbit, Agnikul, and more attracting attention from the world.

Space Tech is estimated to be a 350 Billion USD, industry. It is also a very complex industry. It is not just about technology. This industry will challenge the Engineer inside us, a scientist inside us, an Astro-physicist inside us, an astronomer inside us, a mathematician inside us, a physicist inside us, a Chemistry expert inside us, a robotics enthusiast inside us, an electronics and communication engineer inside us, a botanist inside us, a biologist inside us, a virtual reality enthusiast inside us and this list can go on. Who knows, as Elon Musk says, we may become an inter-planetary species and that will make the field very intriguing opening up a plethora of opportunities for the brave and the innovators.

With so much excitement and unknowns, many have to still grapple with “What is Space Tech?”,  “What opportunities exist?” “What can an Technology company do to be part of this little-known area?”

For Technology companies, I believe, there are plenty of opportunities to explore. I am listing few areas, in random order, and what organization should and can do, to be part of this exciting future.

1) Education:

Space Tech being a new area, it will require extensive education across the globe, to build the capabilities. The vast fields of science and tech will see content being developed, and education being delivered via various mediums. The opportunities to educate about the Space Tech will be majorly driven by the subject matter expertise and how the content gets tailored to be delivered to the various age groups of audience.

Technology companies can look at exploring the possibilities to work with various experts in the field of Science, Physics, Robotics, Chemistry, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Satellites, Communications, Mathematics, Healthcare, Virtual Reality, Satellite Imagery, image analysis, and work on creating real education solutions in the form of content delivery and development systems.

2) Data Analysis, Data Science, with Computer Vision:

As the Near Earth Orbit (NEO) or Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation starts forming, with many ventures trying to put cube satellites and nanosatellites to deliver earth imagery solutions, the opportunities for data analysis, image analysis, and decision support systems will evolve. Imagine, as the imagery data from Moon and other planets start coming in, which might open new opportunities for the Data Scientists and Computer Vision specialists.

At present, the hands-on working experience on projects based on Data Analytics and predictive analytics space will help organizations develop capabilities in computer vision, image analysis and decision support systems.

3) DogeCoin & Cryptocurrency management:

Who knows, there may be inter-planetary cryptocurrency exchanges, which may throw open innumerable software development opportunities.

Having done some preliminary work on Blockchain, cryptocurrency solutions, I further plan to research the field of DogeCoin and Cryptocurrency management. Developing the necessary capabilities for the future is the first step towards creating opportunities to explore this space.

4) Simulation Systems:

Virtual Reality is of my keen interest . I am excited to explore Unreal Engine’s capabilities to learn, how we can be part of the industry, to help develop interesting simulation systems for space travel.

At the same time I feel this is appropriate time to explore possibilities to partner with frontline Space Tech organizations, to explore possibilities in becoming their technology partner and help develop transformational systems and platforms in the areas of (to name a few),

  • Compliance Management Systems
  • Advanced Simulation Systems
  • Payload management and tracking systems
  • Space Health & Medicine
  • Waste Management Solutions
  • Asteroid/Comets/Meteor tracking,  Deflection (of large and very large objects), and destroyer systems
  • Satellite and communication management systems
  • Satellite Internet services systems

Space Tech will bring in a lot of opportunities. There will be many “first-time” events that we will get to see in our lifetime. Technology will fuel the growth of this industry. I am personally very excited about this space, as it presents many unknowns and will challenge the status quo. This will also help us to see the world very differently.

The world should prepare for the exciting opportunities that the space has in store for us. This blog was originally published on IVL Global
