What are IT Services?

The word “IT Services” is representing the very vast field of Information Technology services on which we have our needs at one end and the result by applying Information Technology fundamentals to get fulfill those needs are on another end. In-between those both ends, we have the infrastructure which will facilitate it at the hardware level, the networking part which will take care of the communication and delivery of the data in a secure way, the workforce which includes the human resource having the expertise to set up the devices and infrastructure at the hardware level and at the software level too, the security mechanism which will give security to end user’s data and many more.

So, when someone says that he can provide IT Services, that means he has infrastructure along with the manpower ready at that time and he is going to use it to facilitate you by automat the process for your data to increase the business output. Fundamentally IT Services is something that can automate your processes by using IT and eliminate human mistakes and increase the speed of the processes to get the desired result in a specifically defined time.

In starting, the use of Information Technology is to collect the information digitally, save it and deliver it wherever and whenever needed by humankind. Later Security, Disaster Recovery, Backup, CDN are introduced as an advancement in the same framework, and these days we are using banking services, social media, OTT Platforms, Online classes, virtual meetings, IoT, and many more.

As per the present scenario, we are using IT services by saving our important information digitally in a secure environment and getting it delivered by the highly secure channels anywhere, anytime according to our need.

Need of Cloud-Based IT Services

To provide IT Services, experts need the IT infrastructure and related manpower. IT infrastructure includes the Servers with Racks, Internet, Electricity, Network equipment (like routers, switches, etc.), security-related hardware & software (like L3 firewalls, WAF, etc.). So, when you arrange all these things in your premises and use IT Services as per your business needs then it’s called the On-premises IT infrastructure.

These days IT Services are used by everyone however his business is related to IT Services or not. Because banking, ERP, CRMs, Websites, etc. are the need of every business and everyone facilitating their customers by empowering business with IT Services. But the big question is “Why does anyone spend a huge amount of money, time, and human resources on IT Infrastructure when he is doing business in a different domain than IT?”. For example, some companies make wafers and have a good product range with a huge customer base then instead of spending time, money, and human resources on IT infra they need to spend the same on their primary business. But how do they fulfill the need of their needs which can only be using some specific IT service?

The simple answer is Cloud-Based IT Services are the simple solution for these kinds of companies. Cloud-Based IT Services are about using IT Services without managing IT resources on your own. Actually these days we have companies who are dedicatedly developing data centers with world-class facilities like high-speed internet, auto-scaling, 99.999% uptime, DR facilities, Backups, etc. and they are selling the bundle of services on monthly rent basis.

Understanding Cloud-Based IT Services

Every company wants their 100% focus on their core business. IT Services are needed of every company today but they do not want to set up the IT Infra by spending their money and resources to maintain it. So they are partnering with some other companies who have a good IT infrastructure and taking the IT-related services without spending any resource, manpower, or money to maintain and set up the on-premises IT infrastructure.  Certain companies are building the Datacenters to provide the IT Services for their customers, known as Cloud Service Provider companies. These kinds of companies are building their Datacenters and providing the bundled IT Services to those companies who want to use IT services but don’t want to develop IT infra in their premises. The cloud service providers have three models as follows:

  1. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS):

This type of cloud service is only providing the IT infrastructure to the end client. Suppose you have some application on which you have enough expertise but you do not want to spend the money on hardware and networking equipment to host that application then you are actually in need of an IaaS provider. In this case, the IaaS provider gives you the servers or virtual machines over the cloud with the configuration as per your need and they will give you access to that infrastructure over the internet by using some IP address or URL with login credentials to ensure authentication on that resource. So as a result you can get the server, storage, and networking in the IaaS model.

  1. Platform as a Service (PaaS):

In this method, cloud service providers give you the platform on the pay-as-you-go model. PaaS also provide you the Server, Networking, and storage along with some middleware as a development tool, business intelligence services, container, etc. A popular example of PaaS is Kubernetes on AWS in which you will get the IaaS with some middleware on which you can work and achieve your IT-related business goals.

  1. Software as a Service (SaaS):

The SaaS model gives you all three things, IaaS + PaaS + some software for end-user. If you are using a cloud-based app like email, any online game, banking apps, etc. then you are using the IT services on the SaaS model.

Types of Cloud-Based IT Services

Benefits of Cloud-Based IT Services

All three models of cloud-based IT services are based on pay as you go model and prevent customers to pay the huge upfront cost by keeping the future in his mind. You can decide the resources as per today’s need and pay accordingly and if in the future, you need to downgrade, upgrade or discontinue the services then you can get it in seconds. Even some cloud service providers give you the facility of auto-scaling in which your resources scale horizontally in real-time and when the consumption goes low the resources are downscale automatically as per the minimum configuration decided.

The on-premises challenges were also eliminated in Cloud. If you put the IT Infra, on-premises, then you will face problems while power fluctuations, Earthing Issues, Internet Speed and fluctuation issues, etc. but by using the cloud you can ensure the seamless delivery of your IT Services without any hurdle.

Hardware aging is one of the biggest issues which need to purchase the new hardware at least every 3 years but if you are using the cloud then you never need to think about the aging of the hardware. Patch management and Hardware maintenance are part of the job of the Cloud service providers.

Cloud services also protect you from ransomware, viruses, and another kind of cyber and security threats. The Datacenters has their own security mechanism in which datacenter grade firewalls, highly capable antiviruses are protecting the workload over the clock. The datacenter is also making backups and running workloads in redundancy by applying a Disaster Recovery mechanism. The Backup protects data against accidental/intentional deletion of data and also provides ransomware protection.
