This is the sixth of the multi-part blog series titled ‘DIGITAL ENTERPRISE TRANSFORMATION, INDIA PARADIGM’ and captures the theme of Digital Talent in India from the standpoint of digital talent pool and digital talent distribution. For the purpose of the Digital Enterprise Survey and the ensuing report, digital talent refers to skills, skill sets, roles, and profiles required for executing digital transformation projects, including mainstream and emerging technology skills, as well as skills in design thinking and emerging tech development methods (DevOps, DevSecOps, Low Code-No Code).

My previous blogs focused on the various facets of State of Technology Adoption in India and set the context for my present and upcoming blogs which encapsulate the key insights on digital enterprise transformation from an Indian end-user enterprise perspective. These insights have been drawn from the NASSCOM-Avasant “Digital Enterprise Survey” conducted in May’2022. Based on the analysis of the survey results, NASSCOM and Avasant formulated the “The Digital Enterprise Maturity Index,” which forms a key constituent of the “DIGITAL ENTERPRISE MATURITY 3.0: Boosting Business Resilience through Technology” Report published in July 2022.

KEY INSIGHTS ON DIGITAL TALENT POOL AND DIGITAL TALENT DISTRIBUTION: 

  • In FY2023P, on average, digital talent in Indian enterprises could grow manifold at a much faster pace than global digital talent

On average, digital talent both in India as well as globally was 5-10% of the total talent in FY2022. In FY2023P, a significant uptick is  projected in the average digital talent for Indian enterprises with 15-20% of the total talent expected to be digital.

In fact, the Indian tech industry crossing the 5 Mn mark in terms of total industry workforce (direct employees) in FY2022, of which 1.6 Mn employees (32%) were expected to be digitally skilled, is testament to the growing pool of digital talent which end-user enterprises can leverage too. Additionally, Indian enterprises also have a talent base of 2 Mn+ STEM graduates every year to choose from.

Further, in FY2023, the number of Indian enterprises with more than 15% of their total workforce constituting digital talent is expected to grow manifold as compared to the corresponding previous year figures.

  • In FY2023P, Indian enterprises likely to scamper for Digital Talent and hence, spend more on upskilling/reskilling employees as well as exploring multiple channels to acquire/retain skilled digital talent

In FY2022, Indian enterprises employed ~50% of their headcount as Full-time Employees (FTEs) with the remaining half split almost equally between Part-time Employees (PTEs) and Gig workers. This trend is expected to continue in FY2023P as well.

In FY2022, on average the number of FTEs, PTEs, and Gig employees for global businesses was 53%, 24% and 23% respectively. In FY2023P, global enterprises are estimating ~55% of their overall headcount to be FTEs, a quarter of their employees as PTEs and ~20% as Gig workers.

Thus, in both FY2022 and FY2023P, the share of PTEs and Gig employees is greater in Indian enterprises as compared to their global counterparts. This could be indicative of the talent-war intensifying at a greater level for Indian companies as compared to their global peers. Hence, Indian enterprises are looking to build a holistic talent pool constituting a fair share of part-time and gig employees along with FTEs in order to fulfil the rapidly increasing demand for digitally skilled talent.

In my forthcoming blogs, we will assess key trends focusing on digital talent strategy, hybrid work models, and different dimensions of digital maturity with respect to Indian end-user enterprises.
