We are all witnessing the unprecedented energy crisis that Europe is facing. Supplies of Russian gas, which is essential for heating, industrial processes, and power, have been cut by more than 80% this year. The world has also witnessed surge in wholesale prices of electricity and gas by as much as 15-fold since early 2021, with severe effects for households and businesses. With the upcoming harsh winter months, this crisis is expected to lead to further shortages, and have a harsh impact on recession as well.

With the 5G auctions that occurred a few months ago in India, the next decade will be led by digital convergence by driving transformation and advancement in industry. 5G is expected to expedite digitalization of energy & utilities sector, leading to increased energy efficiency and utilization, resulting in environmental sustainability.

Through the use of smart grids and smart meters, 5G is expected to reduce transmission and distribution losses, do load management, reduce commercial losses, automate power flow and voltage stabilization.

Some of the use cases include –

  1.  Remote monitoring & maintenance - Digital workforce solutions such as AR/VR enabled through 5G are expected to enable technicians to remotely monitor machinery and engage in maintenance activities ensuring better asset management and worker safety in times of hazardous conditions. Example: Infosys engaged with a major energy company in Netherlands to develop an AR/VR solution to facilitate remote troubleshooting & maintenance of underground equipment using 5G during the pandemic. Energy production can be monitored across wind turbines, solar farms with smart sensors which can help in remote site inspection reducing service visits and preventing outages.
  2. Connected energy stations - Cellular IoT-enabled orchestration of EV charging stations are expected to help support station monitoring and maintenance smart energy management. Connected Oil Refineries, Power Stations & Coal Mines equipped with sensors will be digitalized through 5G such that predictive analytics will help increase operational efficiency minimizing energy losses.

While many use cases exist many across various industries, 5G can help in better energy efficiency and energy utilization.
