“MAKING URBAN MOBILITY SUSTAINABLE, SEAMLESS AND SAFE” is NASSCOM’s first ever attempt to understand urban mobility challenges and trends in India, the associated problems and how technology can solve the same. The overall aim of the report is to look for ways to achieve a sustainable, seamless and safe urban mobility for the country, which will require greater collaboration between stakeholders.

Key Highlights

Key Trends

  1. Population and Urbanization are witnessing a significant growth across the globe, and the Indian cities are leading the forefront
    • People continue to move towards cities in search for better opportunities which is driving urban sprawl – cities expansion from the core to peripheries
    • Urban sprawl Increasing travel distances; Economic growth with easy finance options amidst a lack of quality public transportation, resulting in unprecedented rise in private vehicles on the road
    • A number of problems for urban mobility from traffic congestion and pollution, to parking challenges and freight inefficiencies
  2. Increasing Use of Urban Mobility Both from People and Freight, is Putting Pressure on Cities Infrastructure and Demand for Fossil Fuels.
    • The road infrastructure has not been able to keep pace with the increase in the number of vehicles
    • Consequently, congestion, road safety, parking and dependence on fossil fuels have become key urban mobility challenges
    • Putting more roads and parking spaces is no more a solution as more roads ultimately attract more traffic in turn aggravating congestion and fuel bills
  3. Pollution which the key driver of climate change finds major cause in increasing number of Cities with Transportation (lead by private vehicles) being the Major Contributor
    • Cities have become major contributors to pollution, and account for more than 60% of greenhouse gas emissions across the globe, with traffic accounting for 25% of urban outdoor air pollution
    • Rising pollution is resulting in serious health hazards with air pollution expected to cause seven million deaths globally in 2019
  4. Using clean vehicle technology is the solution to curb the transport pollution menace – where currently India lags adoption, but it has become a dire need for low carbon footprint
    • Though, in recent years the government has put in place a number of conducive policies, the share of electric vehicles in the country remains negligible. Going forward, India targets to achieve a 30% EV sales by 2030 across all modes, which would need an aggressive implementation plan, supportive policy environment and adequate & fast charging infrastructure
  5. Proliferation of Data Needs Integrated and Connected Systems – for Efficient Urban Mobility Management

 Role of Technology

  • Technology can solve for majority if not all urban mobility challenges through Mobility as a service (MaaS), which includes – efficient, integrated and connected mobility solutions based on standardized data and data sharing platforms.

 Coordinated Efforts from Stakeholders

  • Apart from technology the shift towards cleaner mobility requires a strong coordinated effort across stakeholders. Considering that urban mobility makes a huge impact to the environment, economy, city planning and society at large; the government will continue to play a lead role, with technology, auto and other companies being at the forefront to support these initiatives by innovation and shift in business models, and NASSCOM will continue to play the role of a facilitator to achieve a Seamless, Sustainable and Safe Urban Mobility Ecosystem.
  • Key Recommendations:
    • Focus on Comprehensive Urban Planning
    • Driving Public Transport and Shared Mobility Adoption
    • Push for Clean Mobility
    • Create and Implement Integrated Mobility Systems
    • Support for New Technology Innovation in Mobility
