Two years after successfully launching the Centre of Excellence for IoT in Bangalore, NASSCOM along with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and Department of Electronics & IT, Government of Haryana launched a new destination for innovation in the northern region of India, the Centre of Excellence at Gurugram, Haryana. It is aimed to act as a collaborative sandbox for innovation and problem solving for India by bringing in the best minds from industry, academia, start-ups and the government.

Being labelled as the Centre of Excellence for “Intelligence of Things”, the deep-tech hub successfully blends together innovation, co-creation and collaboration for creating solutions to some of the greatest challenges facing our country today, such as drought, food security and lack of doctors across regions.

The centre was inaugurated by Shri Vipul Goyal, Hon’ble Minister for Industry and Commerce, Government of Haryana in the presence of other eminent dignitaries, Shri Ajay Sawhney, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Shri Gopalakrishnan S., Joint Secretary,  Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Shri Vijayendra Kumar, Secretary, HARTRON along with Debjani Ghosh, President, NASSCOM and executives of leading companies.

As these dignitaries walked into the Centre of Excellence, a facial recognition AI software with a camera recognised each of the prominent individuals from their public photos. The keynotes addressed some of the industry’s success stories in Agriculture, Manufacturing, Healthcare, Energy, Transportation & Logistics, Automotive, Government, Defence and other sectors that the Centre of Excellence had already been premise to, like the development of the intrusion detection and alert system for military at borders with a communication range of 180 ft & detection range of 20-30 ft by SenseGiz Technologies and the predictive maintenance of engine gearboxes that can reduce coal consumption by 0.5%-1% while mitigating losses of over 1 cr (in 2 days) by ExactSpace.

The inauguration saw  Shri Ajay Sawhney, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) speak about the importance of IoT and it’s impact on India’s economy, how it can transform the way industries interacted within and with each other.

The focus of the CoE in Gurugram is on the adoption of technology by working with the state government, corporate partners, other Public Sector Undertakings and the “Co-Create Program”. It  plans to supplement tech entrepreneurs with prototyping, piloting, manufacturing and distributing where innovators, thinkers and entrepreneurs can focus on creation of the “digital technologies of tomorrow” for a better country tomorrow.

The launch also saw the initiative of the co-creation program that enables robust collaboration between solution providers like innovators, start-ups, thinkers, SMEs and solution seekers like entreprises and the government for solving real-world challenges.

The platform has a number of Use Cases listed for co-creation, such as the need for the Indian Railways for centralized monitoring of the CNC machines in the Railways division spread all over the country, the use case for cylinder defect identification by BPCL.

The inauguration was followed by the lab tour and meeting start-ups. The Gurugram centre has already 8 start-ups incubated since July ‘18. The meetup created an atmosphere filled with curiosity, excitement and enabled for great connections being made between them and esteemed government dignitaries and corporate leaders. So far, the Centre of Excellence has over 50 start-ups incubated, 12 start-ups graduated, 25 partners signed, 225 people employed, 29 patents filed, 9 granted patents and 12 solution co-created.

The event saw the dazzling display of deep tech start-ups including the Gurugram Centre incubatees- Aether Biomedical, DronaMaps, TorchIt, ChironxAI, Janitiri and Qualcomm nominated start-ups Sensworx, Shellios Technolabs and iClimb Systems. In addition, other start-ups like Inaaya, humanoid robotic assistant, Parkzap Labs, Vision Computing based Toll management & smart parking solution and Gesture Research, AR based product to assist Neurosurgeon were also present during the demonstration.  As the minister walked around the futuristic devices and technologies, he also happened to offer Rs. 15 lacs to one start-up for their highly inventive and innovative work. The invitees saw the demonstration of 3D field mapping and precision agriculture by incubatee, DronaMaps using GIS, Multispectral Image Analytics and deep learning algorithms, DronaFarms which helps in soil health analysis, yield predictions, crop disease detection and segregation as well as irrigation contour management. Some of their current engagements with the state governments and enterprises include- Smart Village Mori, Andhra Pradesh and Precision Agriculture Initiative for Reliance Foundation. ChironX, another incubatee, into retinal diagnostics demonstrated reading a fundus images using its algorithms. ChironX diagnoses diseases based on observed medical signs and manifestations – for both retinal, as well as systemic diseases like Cardiovascular ailments, Alzheimer’s, Stroke and Parkinson’s, in low resource environments.

The culture of deep-tech innovation, co-creation and collaboration is behind revolutionary advancements in today’s industry and environment, for example, the even the light bulb was created with a similar culture in the Menlo Park workshop, where innovation and invention is rooted in research and hard work.
