SpaceTech: A Scaling DeepTech Role Model

Scaling a DeepTech start-up has always been a discussion point among industry leaders, but many people kept on questioning whether it is easy to scale DeepTech start-ups or not. SpaceTech was once one of those industries that appeared to be out of reach for the average person or even its stakeholders due to the technology involved and the scale required.

However, the last two years have been extraordinary for SpaceTech.A sector that was not even on the list of investors' priorities has suddenly become one. A sector that was unreachable for entrepreneurs has suddenly become the hunting ground for founders. A sector where the government is planning to come up with specific policies because of the potential this sector can offer.

A lot has happened in the SpaceTech sector in the last two years, leading to a sudden shift in focus. But what are those:

  • Stakeholders' Activeness: DeepTech start-ups cannot scale, each ecosystem stakeholder must come together and start working towards it and this active participation is visible in SpaceTech sector.

  • Investor Interest: From almost no funding in 2020 to more than $200 million funding in 2022. This rise in funding is one of the key steps that led to the sudden rush towards this sector.

  • High calibre start-ups: India now has high potential start-ups that are building world class products from India. These start-ups have proven to the world that Indian innovation is not only cost effective but can match global standards.

  • Commercialization potential: Hypersatellites, microsatellites, and many more products have the potential to create many commercial opportunities that can be scaled like any other B2C start-up.

  • Government Active Plans: The central government plans to release a new SpaceTech policy by 2023.Telangana government has already laid out its SpaceTech framework to establish Telangana as a global destination for space technology. The government is also investigating the viability of establishing space technology industrial parks.

  • Increasing Corporate Participation: Both Indian and global corporations are getting actively involved in the SpaceTech sector and are helping start-ups scale their ventures through outside support.

So, it is clear that when all ecosystem stakeholders come together, no one can stop that sector from scaling. SpaceTech growth in India is an inspiration for many other DeepTech areas that think that DeepTech can't be scaled rapidly.
