According to a U.N report, the global population is projected to reach nearly 10 billion by 2050, putting tremendous pressure on agricultural production, which has to be increased by 70% to support voracious food requirements. Moreover, multiple economic, environmental, and sociological phenomena like soil erosion, deforestation, and global warming are depleting natural resources. These are posing some severe problems for basic human survival in meeting and responding to the ever-growing feeding needs of our planet. Hence, there is an urgent need for an innovative, more efficient, and even more productive supply and demand chain approach.

Agriculture is one of the oldest and most important professions, it is a $5 trillion industry on a global space, which today is at the apex of technological advancement. Intelligent robots and machines are slowly but steadily entering the agricultural field. They are supported by automated artificial intelligent systems, powered by deep learning and machine learning algorithms, and big data analytics. They are capable of providing efficient solutions and bring hope to revolutionize the agriculture sector, thereby guiding us towards the possible second green revolution.

Some emerging applications of Artificial intelligence in the agriculture sector are listed below.

  • Soil health monitoring system - Increased deforestation has made the task of examining soil quality very difficult. The soil type and soil nutrition play an essential role in determining crop growth and crop quality. Soil health monitoring systems use image recognition-based technology to identify any deficiencies in the nutrients of the soil along with any plant pests and diseases. Using this, farmers can understand how to use required fertilizers and required pest control and can take precautions to improve crop quality.

 

  • Agricultural Robotics - AI robots are capable of performing multiple tasks, addressing skill and workforce gap in the agricultural sector. Agricultural AI bots are harvesting crops at a higher volume, identifying and eliminating weeds more accurately and at a faster pace than human laborers, and thereby reducing cost and risk. AI robots like smart tractors use data insights to remotely plant seeds in the most optimized way. These robots are trained to determine soil quality, sow seeds in the field, monitor crop quality, detect weeds before the naked eye and direct it to the farmers to take some precautions to preserve the yield during the course of the year.

 

  • Crop health analysis using Drones and satellite - Drones and satellite imaging captures data from the field which can be used for analysis using AI algorithms and provide a detailed report containing the current status of the farm. It helps farmers identify pests, plant disease, and bacteria and take actions like pest control in a timely manner.

Conclusion:

Early adopters of Artificial Intelligence and other emerging technologies will have significant advantages in the agricultural sector. It will help farmers not only to obtain higher agricultural yields, better wealth by automating their farming, but most importantly, it will make Precision Agriculture and sustainable farming a reality benefitting the whole of mankind.
