In the post covid world, the pace of technological change is astounding. In the past, it would take decades for a new technology to go mainstream. However, today new technologies can go from concept to commercialization in just a few years. This is due to factors like increasingly available computing power, falling data storage costs, and a growing number of skilled engineers and scientists.

IT Modernization is the process of updating and improving an organization’s IT infrastructure. By investing in IT modernization, a company can improve its IT infrastructure and gain a competitive advantage. Enterprises have witnessed upto 30% increase in IT productivity, upto 40% increase in employee motivation, upto 60% reduction in defects, and upto 60% reduction in time to market.

IT Modernization has various phases which includes the planning phase, where organisations identify their needs and goals and assess their current IT infrastructure, Implementation phase, where necessary changes are made to the IT infrastructure, Testing phase, where organisations test whether the new infrastructure meets their needs and the Deployment phase, where new infrastructure is provided to the users.

The types of IT Modernization used by enterprises include the following -

  1. Cloud migration can be implemented through lift and shift migration i.e. lifting an application or system out of its current hosting environment and shifting it to another environment; technical migration i.e. maintaining existing applications but upgrading the operating system and database to meet certain transformational goals; application migration i.e. transforming application layer, along with the operating system and database.

 

  1. Application modernization which can be implemented through refactoring i.e. optimizing and restructuring the existing code to remove technical debt and improve nonfunctional attributes; Rebuilding i.e. rewriting or redesigning the application component from scratch while preserving its scope and specifications; and Replacing i.e. eliminating the former application component and replace it, considering new requirements and needs.

 

  1. Platformization – Each organisation has a different modernization solution, which fits its requirements, needs, platforms, and goals. Having a platform modernization strategy is what matters most. Modernizing legacy platforms equip businesses to perform better. There are different ways to implement platformization, some common approaches include using a cloud-based platform, containerized platforms, microservices architecture, low code no code platforms, etc.

 

  1. Emerging Technology Infusion - Emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Augmented Reality (AR), the Internet of Things (IoT) and quantum computing can help enterprises scale on demand, improve resiliency, minimize infrastructure investments, and deploy solutions rapidly and securely. These technologies can help companies create powerful transformations to drive revenue and outshine the competition.

 

  1. Data modernization - Taking a data-first modernization approach means that the company anchors their business strategy on data, determining what data is business-critical, where is it used, and how to make the most of it to gain competitive advantage. Without a proper modernization strategy, data will remain distributed across silos and legacy systems, thus preventing from capitalizing on its full value and presenting significant roadblocks to increased profitability.

 

  1. Security modernization - As the threat landscape continues to evolve, it is important for businesses to stay up to date on the latest security technologies and practices. In addition to these common types of IT modernization, there are many other specific initiatives that enterprises may undertake. These initiatives may be tailored to the specific needs and goals of the organization.
