Post pandemic, organisations have moved their operations to cloud. As companies across the world have adopted cloudification and are fast moving ahead in the digital transformation curve through wide adoption of cloud, engineering R&D companies are also fast adopting and moving their operation to the cloud. Enterprises have realized that these operations can be managed more effectively and securely in the cloud. Engineering and manufacturing cloud is a hybrid/public/private cloud solution to transform the performance of engineering activities by hosting core engineering systems in the cloud.

There are many benefits of moving the engineering and manufacturing activities onto the cloud.

Engg cloud 1
  1. Improve product design and production performance with high compute and Graphical Processing Units (GPU) resources
  2. Enhanced protection of customer and in house IP and assets
  3. Improved remote collaboration between the design and production engineers
  4. Improved connectivity between frontend and backend technology systems
  5. Integrated emerging technologies for innovation in the product and production cycle
  6. Reduced downtime of IT and OT systems
  7. Predictive monitoring and maintenance of field assets and equipment
  8. Enhanced bill of materials (BOM) visibility across different production plants
  9. Streamlined supplier onboarding and collaboration

There are some initial implementation challenges faced by companies while moving the engineering applications to cloud. They include –

Engg cloud 2
  1. Secure migration of heavy design and simulation data to the cloud
  2. Balancing preconfigured cloud components and customized engineering applications
  3. Seamless integration of disparate engineering systems and tools in a hybrid environment
  4. Stabilizing the performance of the new engineering cloud environment
  5. Revising the IT and R&D budgeting policies while shifting from a CAPEX to an OPEX model
  6. Complying with industry specific regulations
  7. Sourcing the right talent pool with cloud and engineering specific expertise
  8. Managing change among diverse teams with different tools and aligning multiple stakeholders

Though challenges exist but the benefits far outweigh the challenges faced by the engineering companies. Post pandemic, we have witnessed the reduction of reluctance of engineering and manufacturing companies to move their applications to cloud. The ER&D industry is coming to terms with the advantages of cloud, and more and more enterprises will soon adopt cloud in an extensive manner.
