With the World IP day approaching round the corner on the April 26th, I thought of reading through the “World Intellectual Property Indicators 2022”, and see where the IP creation is moving.

Some initial trends that I saw and more will be covered in my next few blogs.

  1. Global patent applications returned to pre-Covid-19 levels in 2021 – with 3.4 million patent applications filed in 2021, which were slightly higher than the pre-COVID peak of 3.3 million filed in 2018.

  1. China leads the patent filed tally ahead of the US - China received 1.59 million patent applications in 2021 (5.9% growth over 2020), more than double the number received by the US
    • China’s share of the world total has almost doubled, from 24.4% in 2011 to 46.6% in 2021. Which has also resulted in each of the other four offices (US, Japan, Korea, European Patent Office) in the top five experiencing a decrease in their respective shares over the same period.

  1. Non-resident applicants represent a large proportion of applications across the top 10 patent offices.

Notably, China, Japan and the Republic of Korea – had the greatest number of resident patent applications per GDP in 2021
