Video Surveillance System- A digital video surveillance system is a surveillance system capable of capturing images and videos that can be compressed, stored or sent over communication networks. Digital video surveillance systems can be used for nearly any environment.

How it can help us in future with AI- It utilizes computer software programs that analyze the audio and images from video surveillance cameras in order to recognize humans, vehicles, objects and events. Security contractors’ program is the software to define restricted areas within the camera's view (such as a fenced off area, a parking lot but not the sidewalk or public street outside the lot) and program for times of day for the property being protected by the camera surveillance. The artificial intelligence (A.I.) sends an alert if it detects a trespasser breaking the rule set that no person is allowed in that area during that time of day.

Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) has the power to transform the value of data across industries and we are seeing enough examples of the same in the world around us. One of the biggest, though not so well known, transformations powered by A.I. has been of the CCTV security industry. Over 116 million network cameras were shipped in the professional surveillance market last year, with the capability to generate almost 9 petabytes of video data every day. Here, A.I. has enabled the integration of technology with the traditional surveillance practices, leading to the development of smart video solutions that transcend beyond surveillance.

The AI functions work on Machine vision. Let’s take an Example of this, In Delhi, there are many of hidden cameras present and many cameras are able to see, and these cameras capture the road vehicles speed, capture the vehicle number plate and after that they know every detail of that vehicles. Now a days, after captures all these stuffs they maintain a report of that vehicle and send it to owner’s home with all records where they increase their vehicle speed and how much speed is increased. It happens in many of the big cities and actually it requires so that they are in their limits and start follow the rules.

From Eye to A.I.

The application of AI and data analytics in the area of conventional video surveillance has given rise to intelligent video analytics. With A.I. playing a critical role in using computer intelligence capabilities, including object recognition, movement detection, and tracking or counting objects people; it has created a technological edge for the users that no traditional security camera alone can offer.

Growing number of new use cases

An obvious example of the current pandemic is the growing adoption of thermal cameras within healthcare to detect elevated skin temperatures in a non-invasive and contactless method. Another interesting use case is in the field of sports analytics where video analytics aids in an in-depth analysis of the sports video footage, identifying actions of interest that can help train athletes and players to improve their game and so much more. What is more, building management, smart city management as well as agriculture, among others, are seeing the greater deployment of cameras for remote monitoring and are some of the innovative ways in which A.I. is merging with video to create a future-ready smarter world.

Storage that is ready for A.I.

The evolution in the smart video is simultaneously creating an urgent need for capturing, retaining, analyzing the huge volume of data being generated, thus propelling the need for surveillance grade storage that will support AI requirements like metadata tagging etc.

As it becomes a common practice to use cameras with higher resolutions, both storage drives and microSD cards are also getting an upgrade in capacity and performance to accommodate the growing need to manage content for AI requirements.

Non-rule-based form of A.I. for security called "behavioral analytics" has been developed. The A.I. learns what normal behavior is for people, vehicles, machines, and the environment based on its own observation of patterns of various characteristics such as size, speed, reflectivity, colour, grouping, vertical or horizontal orientation and so forth.

There are some future trends—

  • Security workers will not be replaced by AI
  • Companies will seek to increase their video surveillance ROI
  • AI and deep learning in security will help reduce false alarms
  • Advanced post-event search capabilities will be standard practice
  • Video surveillance will deliver business insights, not just security.
