During pandemic, industries were left with no option but to take the path to digital transformation. Emerging technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning (ML), and artificial intelligence (AI) have particularly taken off.

In the age of Industry 4.0, 5G that has laid the foundations for digital transformation of enterprises to soar. All emerging technologies like ML, AI, and IoT are dependent on the high-bandwidth, low-latency attributes that 5G offers. As 5G develops in India, it brings new competencies including the ability to deploy customized and automated services and applications more easily.

These capabilities will have a significant impact on businesses and various sectors. With the enhanced technology that 5G will provide, enterprises, factories, warehouses, office buildings, entertainment venues and many others will deploy services that enable more meticulous production methods, better and more harmonized supply chains, and greater efficiency.

To gather all benefits 5G has to offer, the industry needs systems to manage the solutions and software that will enable enterprises to leverage its speed, accuracy and flexibility. While 5G's software base enables the deployment of these features, it requires the collaboration of telecom industry to develop those capabilities and offer them to customers, who can implement them at their facilities, creating private on-site networks that meet their specific needs, including running robots and other automated systems, thereby leading to higher efficiency and profitability.

To realize this vision, India will need to follow a roadmap that leverages 5G’s capabilities (including programmability and near-zero latency) to develop the networks and services that will allow for the extensive deployment of automated processes.

Networks will also have to transform to meet increasing demands to drive new services, new products, new experience for customers and for the industry players. From closed proprietary legacy networks, network design and architecture are moving towards open radio access network (O-RAN). O-RAN will prevent vendor-lock in, bring more ‘openness’ to the networks by allowing telecom companies to source hardware and software from various vendors. Hence leading to reduction in overall costs.

Many start-ups and industry players have already taken this up to commence work on O-RAN. C-DoT (Centre for Development of Telematics) has found an O-RAN Alliance and is working towards developing an O-RAN testbed.

To lead in the industry 4.0 revolution, policymakers must focus on the following five areas to prepare Indian enterprises to adapt to the fast-changing technology landscape.

In all, opportunities presented by 5G have brought new possibilities for enterprises, allowing them to dream large and expand into previously unimaginable regions. Overall, India's prospects are promising, pending local reforms.
