The pandemic resulted into shut down, which affected school & learning and created a huge void. However, this gap has been filled by e-learning as education institutes have quickly moved education to online platform. It has made it imperative to develop such education based software which not only fulfills the current needs of education but also ensures an uninterrupted flow of learning.  It has made e-learning testing essential. Bugs and other issues which can hamper learning process, can be experienced by both students and teachers alike, and therefore, it is essential that every e-learning solution goes through rigorous testing process to ensure no software issue comes between learning and student/teacher

What makes e-learning testing crucial?

In the post pandemic world, the digital learning has emerged as a new normal way of life. The pandemic has completely revolutionized the traditional chalk-based teaching method. Yet there is a lot that needs to be done in order to ensure student gets the same experience that he/she might get while sitting in the physical classroom.  Similarly, teachers should also be able to enjoy hassle-free teaching from anywhere in the world.

Testing e-learning software is paramount at each stage due to rising number of platforms and the intricacies involved in online content. To ensure bug free product/application in a quick turnaround time, one needs to pave focus on testing. As the curriculum can contain multimedia resources like videos, images, etc. it is essential to take this into account while testing.

The learning resources is accessible on different platforms like: Laptops, Mobiles, Tablets, iPads, Desktops. Also, the platforms have different OS versions, iOS, Windows versions, Hardware’s in terms of Processors, RAM’s. The connectivity of the devices may also be on Mobile N/W’s (3g, 4g or 5g), Broadband, LAN’s etc.

Hence, the compatibility testing on all the above scenarios and combinations is must. So that the content must easily be accessible on the user base. We may require multiple physical devices with multiple combination of OS, connectivity and processors. The proposed testing can be done using a Cloud Infra, however the results may vary in real scenario.

Most important, the content must easily be accessible to the differently abled persons. For the same, we need to do the 508 compliance and accessibility testing using different means.

Is e-learning testing same as software testing?

The one-word answer Is-No. As the term itself suggests, software testing means testing a software application in order to make sure that it functions seamless with high efficiency. However, e-learning testing is done to check how learnable the curriculum is so that it can provide holistic learning experience.  This is due to this basic difference that some special parameters need to be considered while doing e-learning testing.

Let’s have a look at e-learning testing checklist

Successful e-learning pages are more than just online pages with abundant information on them. They need to offer easy navigation experience and should be compatible with all types of browsers and work perfectly both on desktop and mobile. While it is important to present the in-depth information about the course, it is more important to ensure everything is presented in an interesting manner to make it engaging. As a result, it is crucial to equally focus on e-learning testing process to get the desired results. Below are some of the parameters that need to consider at the time of e-learning testing:

  • Testing to ensure grammar, spelling, fonts are correct and follow the consistent style
  • Assessment of graphics and visuals to make more impactful content
  • Proper flow and navigation of content
  • Testing of different features within the curriculum
  • Testing of cross-browser compatibility
  • Testing on different physical devices
  • Functional testing of API’s, UI/UX.
  • Load testing of the e learning platform

E-learning has made learning go beyond boundaries. Now anyone can learn and teach from any part of the world. As a result, it becomes necessary to leverage the best of the school/college environment and blending it with technology to get optimum results.
