In simple terms, a "digital twin" is a digital representation of a physical object, and this object can be a product, network, infrastructure, etc.

Digital twins can be used for variety of simulations, including creating a digital world that’s parallel to the physical world known as Metaverse.

Furthermore, it can help in identifying gaps quickly with the digital representation of an object, starting from the design phase and analysing what will fit for a competitive edge and what will not, and it will further reduce development time and hence time to market.

Consider a virtual computer model that can receive feedback from sensors and gather data from the real-world product. This lets the digital model mimic and simulate what is happening with the original version in real time, creating opportunities to gather insights into performance and any potential problems.

Another example is Google Map that acts as a digital twin of Earth’s Surface so a twin will always process real time data live.

Currently, we need to generate manipulated data to test the system, and there is no way we are able to know the sequence of activities that happen in a production environment. It is also impossible to test the whole scenario as it happens in production.

So a digital twin model can help in this scenario, and we can feed live data to see the output and resolve bugs early in the lifecycle.

More particularly, a process twin is very effective in the case of testing. It happens in four steps.

  • Gather production data or activities as they happen.
  • Understand and recreate the production scenario.
  • Replicate the production conditions.
  • Perform the testing using the digital twin.
