Many elements and factors govern the digital transformation journey, and the best outcomes, per business goals, determine a program's success. Technology, data, infrastructure, processes, managing change, and team competencies are just a few essential components influencing the quality of program delivery. And factors like driving change, team competencies and keeping the consumer mindset in view are critical for delivering a successful digital transformation program. As a myriad of interdependent factors directs the digital transformation journey, providing a successful program becomes a complex and challenging affair. However, three aspects are fundamentally important for a successful digital transformation program.

  1. Results-focused approach

A successful transformation program means achieving the expected business outcomes, necessitating a result-focused approach. It begins with clearly understanding the desired business outcomes and Return-On-Investment (ROI). This comprehension between the client and the implementation partner is attained during the analysis or discovery phase. This assists the client in having a better understanding of their business needs, success factors and priorities. Apart from analyzing the elements that require transformation, its associated rationale must also be examined. This also contributes to specifying the value proposition the implementation partner can provide to the client.

The engagement of several stakeholders is crucial at this stage for paving the foundation for the transformation program. Some key stakeholders in the analysis phase and their roles include,

  1. Strategic and technical consultation are vital for having the correct vision for the program. This requires the engagement of stakeholders like the Chief Experience Officer (CXO), industry domain experts, enterprise architects, business consultants and client transformation sponsors.
  2. Change experts and agile transformation leads are involved in determining the steps for the transformation program and defining a suitable framework for the change.
  3. Change specialists with an agile mindset assist in designing new processes for the transformation program.

Carefully mapping the old processes to new digitized or transformed ones is crucial. This is particularly important for the manual aspects of the current process, as they will be digitized for the first time. Simulating new processes using data and intelligence of manual operations is a critical step. It aids in evaluating the value addition of the latest techniques, measuring success across all stages, and confirming whether desired results will be delivered after implementation. It also helps in identifying dependencies and reducing the risk of program failure.

  1. Blend of technology, experience, and infrastructure for creating desired digital landscape

A digital landscape is a combination of experience, data, and infrastructure. Customer centricity is the critical determinant of designing an appropriate digital landscape.

  1. Designing the landscape is tricky, so choosing between data and experience is essential. However, first creating an engaging and immersive experience could be beneficial as it facilitates embedding technology into the experience seamlessly.

  1. Gathering appropriate datasets and types of channels for collecting data are equally important for creating a 360-degree omnichannel customer view.

  1. Infrastructure is the tool for converting a design into a solution. Narrowing down on the suitable infrastructure depends on three parameters - skills, cost, and scalability. Re-engineering the solution on a modern cloud platform requires a thorough understanding of business flows and the technology stack. A correct blend of hybrid, private and public clouds determine the suitability of the infrastructure for a program.

  1. Engineering fundamentals for a successful delivery

Numerous frameworks and platforms with built-in features are available today based on which scenarios are built. Therefore, understanding the platforms and frameworks is crucial to realizing the idea and maximizing client benefits. However, the knowledge of engineering fundamentals and core engineering skills is essential for successful implementation and delivery. Effective implementation means a program does not experience scalability or performance issues at later stages. Digital technologies are rapidly evolving every day. Thus, thorough knowledge of base languages and design principles is fundamental to having a team skilled at adapting and learning quickly to deliver a successful transformation program.
