The third edition of the Voice of Manufacturing eConclave, led by NASSCOM CoE IndDIC was held on 14th July, exploring how digital interconnectedness is the way ahead for manufacturing. NASSCOM Centre of Excellence IoT & AI engaging with large automotive manufacturing enterprise Volvo-Eicher to discover-design-scale digital solutions & transform industry value-chain digitally.

Against the backdrop of deploying the Innovation model for digital adoption, NASSCOM CoE & Volvo-Eicher constructively & interactively discussed the way ahead to solve challenges in manufacturing, with Aditya K Shrivastava, SVP, Manufacturing Operations, Volvo Eicher & Vivek Saha, Director & Head Digital Transformation & other panellists showcasing key digital solutions. The eConclave, which had 230 select industry & ecosystem participants, with delegates from India, USA and UK, prioritised industry functions, emerging technologies and digital solutions to navigate the way ahead. An engaging participation from industrial front, deliberating challenges and plausible solutions. The session emphasized on self-reliance, reviving business operations and ensuring continuity. It also implied the significant role of digital integrators.

Esteemed center-stage speaker, Mr. Aditya Shrivastava, SVP, Manufacturing Operations, Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicles brought out Current Trends & Needs and On-Ground Real Time Challenges:

· Demand of World Class Quality Products

· Efficiency & Productivity Enhancement – OEE, OLE, reduction in losses

· Manpower training & skill development

· Varying demands & short product life cycles

· Efficiency of Supply chain & shorter lead times

· Regulatory Compliance & government policies

· Limited domain Knowledge

· Availability of Optimized solutions

· Non-compliance of existing machine interface

· Cost vs benefit analysis

· Cyber security

· Service provider selection

The role of Digital Integrators was highlighted upon deliberation of challenges associated with different solution providers- Interfacing with old technology, unavailability of end to end solution, Gaps between solution & actual need, lack of domain knowledge & experience, risk of closing down & long term support. To disband these challenges, it is important to follow model of Automation, Communication & Analysis.

NASSCOM CoE IndDIC brought up key areas of NEW normal to be adopted by the industry:

1. Workplace health compliance – Monitoring employees & Social distancing

2. Decoupling & reconnecting the Supply Chain- Greater visibility and coordination across the supply chain will enable better collaboration

3. Promotion of Localization or Domestic Manufacturing sedded-in with Automation & Robotics

4. Zero-defect / quality assurance and Efficient production

5. Digital Integration across systems & Data as a Strategic Asset- Integrated Control-tower view across the whole manufacturing operation

6. Remote Work, Collaboration and the ‘Virtual Shift’- Rapid adoption of remote diagnostic, management and collaboration tools.

IndDIC also conducted survey to bring out key challenges cited by industry & ecosystem participants:

· Lack of preparedness for automation & Industry 4.0/cyber-physical

· Limited Digital Integration of interacting systems

· Insufficiency in balancing Demand forecasting & re-routing Supply chain

· Change Management Issues – Mental preparedness

· Adaptability of emerging digital technologies – AI, AR/VR & others

· Lack of Digital savvy Manpower

The session further discoursed on several use cases – technologies & impact on business operations.

Use Case 1 – Connected Operations – Vehicle Tracking – monitoring movement of assets, vehicles in warehouses

Use Case 2 – Ensuring Human Safety (hazards & accidents), facial recognition for contactless entry, detection of violations (PPE, restricted entries) – Computer vision based analytics with AI algorithm providing real time information.
