WHITE PAPER - CONNECTED CARS FOR CONNECTED HEALTH CARE

Road crash fatalities and disabilities are gradually being recognized as significant public health concern. Globally, every year, approximately 1.35M people die in road crashes, and an estimated 20-50M suffer from accident-related injuries of varying severity. Post-crash risk is significantly higher for people suffering from co-morbidities such as diabetes, blood pressure, and heart conditions. The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a sharp increase in private vehicle users, which may further aggravate this situation. Some of the vital influencing factors that decide between life and death after a road mishap include how quickly the victim receives medical attention and the quality of the medical care provided. Truckers and taxi drivers spend a lot of time on the road and are not able to monitor their health. Call it a professional hazard, however, they do not have the luxury/time as well as the long sitting posture also induces health risks. Health care and well-being are effective only if provided in all settings and are continuous, holistic, and hyper-personalized. In this paper, we review state-of-the-art technology and solutions in the connected car domain. The paper further provides specific recommendations on how the evolving car technology can be leveraged to provide quality medical care to a vehicle occupant, experiencing a health emergency due to an underlying medical condition or an accident, or a combination thereof.
